Interview With Author Kayla Cunningham

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have two education degrees and teach history to high school students and adult ESL classes. On top of that, I volunteer as a Hostage Crisis Negotiator. Right now, I’m working on my Ph.D. in Teaching English as a Second Language. My husband and I also enjoy taking flying lessons together, which adds some excitement to our lives.

One thing I absolutely love is traveling and meeting people from different cultures around the world. I’ve hosted six boys from China and have visited Asia multiple times. It’s always an incredible experience to explore new landscapes and learn about vibrant traditions.

I was born in San Luis Obispo and grew up near Santa Cruz, California. Nature and the environment hold a special place in my heart because of my coastal upbringing. I’m also passionate about addressing issues of racism, including the rise in Asian hate crimes during the pandemic.

In addition to teaching, I’m a writer. I recently published my first contemporary romance novel, “Fated to Love You.” I just finished the second book in the “Chasing the Comet” series, and I’m currently working on a Young Adult fantasy trilogy called “Storm Breaker.”

At its core, the Chasing the Comet series is a three-part story about finding true love in the face of adversity and racism. It explores themes of grief, loss, hope, and healing, and it is my deepest desire that readers will be transported by the characters’ journey and inspired to embrace diversity and love in their own lives.

The intricate plot and the beautifully developed characters will keep you invested and engrossed from start to finish. I can’t wait for readers to dive into this immersive continuation of the story that will take them on an emotional journey through love, loss, and perseverance. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Fated to Love You and the Chasing the Comet series was written in response to the rise in Asian racism during the pandemic years. I write for change, because my pen is the most powerful tool God has given me, and it is not the time to be silent. Instead, it is time to #writeforchange. There is a great quote in the movie 42, about Jackie Robinson. The quote was, “Maybe tomorrow we’ll all wear 42, that way they won’t tell us apart.” Growing up in a baseball loving household, today I want to wear the #42. I do so with ink.

As a teacher and basketball coach, I had the privilege to host six boys from Asian countries. As a host mom, these boys became part of my family. I have visited them in China and Taiwan in recent years. These boys will always be like the brothers I never had. While Asian racism has always existed, there has been a sharp increase in harassment and violence against Asians since 2020. I witnessed firsthand some of the horrific things that were done or said to my ‘family’ because of their nationality, and I felt ashamed. The country I love no longer seemed as progressive or enlightened as I once believed. It was as if we’d stepped back in time. Some of you may ask, why did I feel guilty? It’s not like I said or did any of those hurtful things. What makes me responsible? It’s simple. Because there was nothing, I was doing to help promote change.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
As a full-time teacher during the day, with multiple other jobs to make ends meet, finding a few moments to write was a constant struggle. However, I knew that this story deserved my time and attention, so I would stay up late into the night, often past midnight, to work on the book.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Sarah J. Maas, Cassandra Clare, JK Rowling, Tessa Bailey, Ali Hazelwood, Helen Hoang, and Nicholas Sparks.

What are you working on now?
The second installment of the “Chasing the Comet” series is called “Threads of Fate.” Just like the first book, Threads of Fate is a contemporary romance full of unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. Despite the odds against them, Cassie and Xuan remain steadfast in their epic love story, willing to do whatever it takes to find their way back to each other – even if it means braving the very forces of the universe that conspire to keep them apart.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Goodreads: Goodreads is a popular platform for book lovers. Create an author profile, add your books to your profile, interact with readers, participate in book discussions, and leverage their advertising options to reach a wider audience.

Book promotion websites: There are several websites dedicated to promoting books, such as BookBub, BookGorilla, and Bargain Booksy. These platforms offer various promotional opportunities, including discounted book promotions, author spotlights, and book recommendations to their subscribers.

Book bloggers and reviewers: Research and reach out to book bloggers and reviewers who specialize in your genre. Offer them review copies of your book in exchange for honest reviews, guest posts, or interviews. Positive reviews can help generate buzz and attract more readers.

Online book communities and forums: Participate in online communities and forums related to books and writing, such as Goodreads groups, Reddit’s r/books, or niche-specific forums. Engage in discussions, share your expertise, and mention your book when relevant (without being overly promotional).

Collaborate with other authors: Network and collaborate with fellow authors through author events, joint promotions, or cross-promotion on social media. By leveraging each other’s audiences, you can expand your reach and gain exposure to new readers.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Here are a few key pieces of advice for new authors:

1. Write consistently: Make writing a regular habit. Set aside dedicated time each day or week to work on your writing projects. Consistency is key to honing your skills and making progress on your manuscript.

2. Read widely: Immerse yourself in different genres and styles of writing. Reading not only exposes you to different storytelling techniques but also helps you understand what works and what doesn’t. It can inspire new ideas and enhance your writing abilities.

3. Embrace the editing process: Writing is rewriting. Understand that the first draft is just the beginning. Embrace the editing process, revise your work, and strive to make it better. Seek feedback from trusted beta readers or join a writing group to gain different perspectives on your writing.

4. Develop your writer’s voice: Find your unique voice as an author. Experiment with different styles and approaches until you discover the one that feels authentic to you. Your voice is what sets you apart and makes your writing resonate with readers.

5. Embrace constructive criticism: Be open to feedback and critique. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and refine your writing. Separate yourself from your work and view feedback as an opportunity to grow and strengthen your skills.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is to “embrace failure as a stepping stone to success.” It’s a powerful reminder that setbacks and mistakes are not indicators of our worth or potential. Instead, they serve as valuable learning opportunities and catalysts for growth.

In the creative process, including writing, failure and rejection are inevitable. However, it’s how we respond to those challenges that truly matters. Embracing failure means reframing it as a natural part of the journey towards achieving our goals. It allows us to learn from our mistakes, adapt our approach, and ultimately persevere.

This advice encourages resilience, determination, and a willingness to take risks. It reminds us that setbacks are not permanent roadblocks but rather springboards for improvement. By embracing failure, we cultivate a growth mindset, allowing us to push beyond our comfort zones and reach our full potential.

So, whenever I face obstacles or encounter setbacks in my writing or any other aspect of life, I remind myself to embrace failure. I see it as an opportunity to learn, evolve, and ultimately move closer to success. It’s a valuable lesson that has empowered me to approach challenges with optimism, resilience, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

What’s next for you as a writer?
As a writer, my focus right now is on editing my second novel in the series. It’s an exciting phase where I get to refine and polish the story, ensuring that it captivates readers and delivers an engaging experience. I believe in the power of revision to elevate a manuscript to its full potential, so I’m dedicated to putting in the necessary time and effort to make it shine.

Once the editing process is complete, I’ll be eagerly looking forward to sharing the second installment of my series with readers. It’s always a thrill to see my work come to life and connect with people who enjoy the stories I create. Interview With Author Chloë L. Blyth

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I am a reader and author from the south coast of England. When I’m not reading, I’m writing, and when I’m not doing either I’m probably binge-watching something on Netflix or attending a fitness class! I have published three books so far, a complete trilogy called The Dangers of Dreaming. It’s fun and twisty, perfect for reading on holiday as you won’t want to put it down! (Beware of sunburn!!!)

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Unity was the third and final book in The Dangers of Dreaming trilogy, so I could say it was inspired by the books that came before it, but I think that’s a bit of a cop-out!

Book One was inspired by a dream that was so realistic it could have been a memory (but it wasn’t), and somewhere along the lines I started thinking about how embarrassing it might be if the person sleeping next to you could watch your dreams too… (embarrassing/terrifying/upsetting depending on the dream!)

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think they’re unusual! I love writing first thing in the morning on a weekend, in my pyjamas, with a cup of something warm.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
All of them? I am an avid reader and I believe that every book influences me in some way, whether it’s a technique I like, or don’t like, they all shape me to be the writer I am today.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a Christmas rom com novella.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m not sure if I’ve found a winner yet, I’m not very good at book promotion!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Try your hardest (edit, edit, edit!) and don’t lose enthusiasm. Write for you.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Errrrr, I don’t know right now!

What are you reading now?
I have just finished Lesson Plan for Murder by Lori Robbins. I love supporting my fellow indie authors!

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing! I will have another standalone book out next year, hopefully.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Hmmmm, it would probably be easier to say the books I definitely wouldn’t bring!

I would bring Dracula & Pride and Prejudice. The other two would be a rom com and a psychological thriller (I’m not sure which). A healthy balance!

Interview With Author Kit James

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
One way or another, I’ve been working creatively all my life, initially in the music business, then in advertising, and also writing comedy sketches for one of Australia’s leading TV comedians, so it’s been a fun ride. During all that time I would write stories, hoping one day to publish. Finally, the moment came when I could concentrate on writing, and Reality Barks was the first book I published. Elliott, the hero of my Mutt to Megastar series, is a fictional dog character, inspired by all the great dogs who have shared their lives with me. He’s super-smart, funny, quick to learn, and he’s a bit of a “smart-arse” too. I love his sense of humour. I quickly realised his story had to be a series, so there are now 3 Elliott books, a prequel, and a Boxset.
I also write as Jinx James, this time mostly dark humour and satire. Using my music experience, I have a series featuring an ageing rock star, Marc Charles, who is desperate to reboot his career, but no matter how hard he tries, he finds he’s the target of a scam to wreck his plans. There are currently three books in my Con The Rock Star series, described as a dark comedy crime caper, with another on the way. Then there’s Dead Funny which I describe as a dark comedy crime fest, a collection of short stories.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Every Which Way But Home. It’s the Prequel to Reality Barks. Readers wanted to know how Elliott had ended up in Barranyup Dog Pound before he was rescued by Jamie, Penny, Adriana and Paul. Amazing as it may seem, I hadn’t thought about it before that, and although my wife and I had adopted lots of dogs from various dog pounds, I had to research the procedure to write this book.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No. Any place, any time is fine for me. Gimme a snoring dog and a blank wall, and I’m happy.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Because everything I write has humour, satire and a bit of the dark side to it, that’s where I normally go. Thinking of dogs, I always chuckle at Chet, Spencer Quinn’s really cool dog character. I love the Chet & Bernie series. Then, everything from Carl Hiaasen; Jennifer Egan’s Goon Squad; Chuck Palahniuk’s Survivor, and John Lanchester’s arch and ultra-wicked The Debt to Pleasure. I couldn’t leave out Look Who’s Back from Timur Vermes; the very dark David Grossman’s A Horse Walks Into A Bar, and anything by Janet Evanovitch.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a new story in the Mutt to Megastar series, in which Elliott will be challenged like never before. Poor dog, thanks to Adman Jamie’s money-making scheming, he’ll have to face up to a big doggie dilemma at the end.
Also, as Jinx James, I’m putting the finishing touches to my first paranormal story, featuring a witch, a psychic, and three famous ghosts. It’s got my signature humour and satire, with corporate greed as its target.

I rely on sites such as Awesome Gang to promote my books.

Interview With Author Berekti Girmay

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am excited to share a little about myself and my writing journey. My name is Berekti Girmay. I was born in Ethiopia and moved to the States for education to pursue my degree. It has been a great life journey so far with all the ups and downs. Through my degree in psychology and gerontology, I have developed a deep understanding of human behavior and the importance of emotional well-being. Working in various fields, including childcare, caretaking, and mental health centers, has been incredibly rewarding. Alongside my professional pursuits, my personal hobbies and passions have played a vital role in shaping me as a writer. I find great joy in watching animation and family movies as they offer a wonderful source of inspiration, imagination, and storytelling in addition to happiness. The art of visual storytelling has influenced the way I craft narratives, incorporating vivid imagery and evocative scenes in my writing.

Another passion of mine is cooking. I believe there is magic that happens in the kitchen,
where flavors and aromas come together to create memorable experiences. The act of
preparing meals and sharing them with loved ones has taught me the significance of
connection, nourishment, and the power of coming together around a shared table. This could be an influence on the Ethiopian culture I grew up with. As for my writing journey, I am proud to say that I have written five books, all of which are my first books and are in the process of publication. Each of my books represents countless hours of dedication, creativity, and a deep passion for storytelling. From imagination and curiosity to
family tradition and sacrifices, my books explore a range of genres, diving into themes of self-discovery, resilience, love, and the daily life experiences of children. Publishing these books is a dream come true for me, and I am eager to share these stories with my young readers around the world. “The Lost Tooth” story is inspired by the anticipation and excitement that children often
experience when they lose their first tooth and place it under their pillow for the Tooth Fairy. This
momentous event in a child’s life is full of wonder and magic, and the story aims to capture that
sense of anticipation and imagination. It also explores the idea of dreams as a gateway to a
magical world, where the Tooth Fairy resides, and the power of dreams to bring joy and wonder
into our lives.

“Maxi’s Hobby, What’s Yours?” is inspired by the common experience of feeling bored or
unfulfilled during gatherings or holidays, especially for children who may not find the activities
engaging or interesting. The story explores the importance of finding one’s passion and the joy

that comes from discovering activities that truly captivate and inspire. It emphasizes the role of
supportive family members, like Maxi’s uncle Tommy, who encourage and guide him in his
search for his true interests.

My Two Guardian’s inspiration is from the strong bond between parents and children and celebrates the love and care provided by both parents, even in the face of busy schedules or changes in circumstances. The story acknowledges the challenges and mixed emotions that children may experience when faced with changes like moving to a new house but underscores the unwavering support and love that parents provide. It aims to highlight the importance of parental guidance and the stability they offer to children.

My Nanas Cooking is inspired by the special relationship between a grandparent and a grandchild, particularly the role of a grandmother in nurturing and caring for her family. The story focuses on the connection formed in the kitchen, where cherished family recipes are shared and culinary traditions are passed down through generations. It highlights the love and gratitude between Mika and her Nana, emphasizing the importance of family bonds and the appreciation of her grandparent’s love and care. The Youngest Lamb’s inspiration is from the innocence and curiosity of young children and the importance of family and safety. The story is set in a serene farm environment and follows the youngest lamb’s adventure into a nearby town, where she faces challenges and learns valuable lessons about caution and the love and care provided by her family. It aims to instill an appreciation for family bonds and the need to carefully navigate the world, especially for young readers.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My unusual writing habits might be quite different from the typical writer’s routine. I find inspiration in random moments, often while I am busy with other tasks like cooking or doing chores around the house, or while watching my nieces play with their toys. Unlike the traditional image of a writer sitting at a desk in a quiet room, I embrace the chaos and creativity that can arise during everyday life. I believe my upbringing, where our house is always filled with family, neighbors, or friends, may have impacted my enjoyment that comes with a full house and sounds. Whether it’s waking up from a night of sleep, stirring a pot on the stove, or conversing around coffee with family, I have learned to embrace these moments of inspiration and let the words flow onto the page. I find that this unconventional approach allows me to find unique ideas, imagination, and stories.

The dynamic nature of my surroundings fuels my thoughts, adding an extra layer of spontaneity and authenticity to my writing. While some may find it challenging to write amidst distractions, it keeps me engaged and connected to the world around me, infusing my stories with vibrant energy. I believe I am able to capture the essence of the human experience in a way that is both relatable and captivating. So, you won’t find me in a quiet room with a clean desk.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been greatly influenced by several children’s book authors who have made a significant impact on my writing journey. One author who has particularly inspired me is Gianna Marino, especially in her book called; Meet Me at the Moon. Her beautiful illustrations captivated me and touched my heart. Marinos storytelling that explored love, separation, and nature resonated deeply with me. Seeing the expressions on my student’s faces, while I read the story to them and hearing their opinions on what they thought about the story, gave me a memory I hold dear, appreciating the author for capturing young readers’ hearts in such a way.

Also, many other authors have played a role in shaping my writing style and approach. I admire authors who understand the importance of children’s growth and development, and whose books reflect that understanding. These authors create stories that entertain, educate, and inspire young readers, fostering their imagination and curiosity. Through the works of these authors, I have learned the power of storytelling to connect with children on an emotional level and to instill valuable life lessons. Their ability to craft engaging narratives and create memorable characters has shaped my writing aspirations.

I hope to create children’s books that not only entertain and engage but also contribute to the growth and development of young minds. It is my belief that through the magic of storytelling, we can inspire children to dream, explore, and embrace the wonders of the world around them.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I am in the process of publishing five of my books, and I could not be more excited to introduce them to my young readers. These books have been a true labor of love, and I am eagerly anticipating the moment when children will immerse themselves in these captivating storybook adventures. Each book holds its own unique message and seeks to convey important lessons through the art of storytelling. Whether its nurturing resilience, exploring the boundless power of imagination, or celebrating the profound bonds of family, I have poured my heart and soul into crafting narratives that engage and inspire young minds. In addition to the publishing process, I am working on supplementary materials that will accompany the books. These resources include discussion guides and interactive activities designed to enrich the reading experience and encourage young readers to dig deeper into the themes explored within the stories. By engaging in meaningful conversations and interactive exploration, I hope to provide a fun, enjoyable, and impactful reading experience. The release of these books fills me with incredible anticipation as I eagerly await the moment, they find their way into the hands of my young readers. My greatest aspiration is that these stories not only entertain but also leave a lasting impact on young minds, igniting their imagination and fostering curiosity while instilling a lifelong love for reading.

Lastly, I have created a personal YouTube channel where I provide psychoeducation and offer advice in foreign languages, with English subtitles available. My aim is to reach the younger generation, emphasizing the paramount importance of mental health, especially given the rising global statistics. I hope to provide valuable insights and support through this platform, empowering young individuals to prioritize and nurture their mental well-being. Do not be afraid to let your voice and unique ideas shine through in your writing. Your
perspectives and style are what make your stories special, perhaps what this world is waiting for. While embracing your uniqueness and letting it guide your storytelling, make sure to expand your horizons by reading books from various genres and authors. This will expose you to different writing styles, narratives, and perspectives, inspiring you to think outside the box and develop your own distinctive approach. Stay motivated to share your work with trusted friends, family, writing groups, or beta readers. Constructive feedback will help you identify strengths and areas for improvement. Be open to critique and use it as a tool to refine your writing.

When it comes to the publishing journey, it can be challenging, with rejections and setbacks

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Well, my mother is my role model, and her words have shaped and guided me throughout my life. One piece of advice she always shares with me is, What God has for you is yours, and as long as you did your best, never be disappointed with the outcome.” She instilled in me the belief that if I pray and work hard for it, whatever is meant for me will come to fruition. It’s a reminder to have faith in the divine plan and to put in the effort to achieve my goals.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently diving into books that focus on mental health and trauma, particularly as they relate to childhood experiences and the ways in which we can reduce generational trauma. It’s a subject that I find incredibly important and intriguing, as understanding the impact of early life experiences can help us foster healing and resilience. These books provide me with valuable insights and strategies to support myself and others on a path toward healing and growth.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a lot of exciting plans ahead. After this book is out, I will focus on crafting the rest of my ideas that have been patiently waiting to go through the process. It’s a thrilling journey to bring these ideas to life, pouring my creativity and passion into the pages. Im excited to continue writing, editing, and shaping these stories, each one with its unique voice and message. I believe there are endless possibilities for my growth as a writer, and I look forward to sharing my future works with the world.

Second, I would bring a survival guide specifically tailored to desert islands, as it would equip me with essential knowledge and skills to increase my chances of survival. Lastly, I would bring my own collection of books. These books hold a special place in my heart, filled with stories and knowledge that I cherish. Having familiar and beloved books with me would not only provide entertainment but also serve as a source of inspiration and escape in the solitude of the island.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am just another lover of stories. I went to college in Philadelphia with hopes of making movies, but they are expensive. I have written 5 books and counting.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “For Love of Fire” and the idea came to me randomly many years ago while cooking diner with a friend. Living in the city you see a lot of homeless people who have lost their minds. There is a part of me that always wants to get to know them, and help them if I can. So I just started imagining what that would be like into this book. In the spirit of losing ones mind I may have taken some LSD while I wrote the final chapters.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I carry a little book with me so I can write ideas down through out the day. I’ll stop whatever I am doing when an idea hits. I’ll even pull my car over to write on the side of the road. Before I got a little book I’d write on anything, mostly receipts at work. Rifling through stacks of receipts was a bit taxing and got to be pretty obnoxious.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Chuck Palahniuk, Neil Gaiman and Elmore Leonard are the three writers I enjoy reading the most. Their work tends to get me excited to write.

What are you working on now?
I am presently writing a thrilling mind trip serial killer origin story about fragile egos, a dysfunctional family, horror movies, and the power of imaginary friends.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have yet to figure this part of the game out…

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. I have no idea how to do the rest of it. Just keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When you aren’t sure, make the next sentence short and to the point and move on.

Interview With Author Amelia Elliot

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author, trial lawyer, business owner, and copywriter. ‘Amelia Elliot’ is my pen name for my works in women’s literary fiction and romance. I also publishes on topics of law, business, and politics. I live and write from a sailboat with my husband and three big dogs. It’s very crowded.

I have published two books as Amelia Elliot, with my third scheduled to come out in September 2023.

I’m also disabled with chronic illness. I read and write romances because they help me stay optimistic through pain and exhaustion. I hope that my books help struggling people find solace. Because my stories will always have a happily ever after!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My second romance novel is titled Conduct Unbecoming a Judge.

My main female protagonist has female infertility–the permanent kind because she had uterine cancer. It’s experimental, because I have not personally read any contemporary romances where infertility is a fact of life for the woman, and I’ve looked. Because this is something I’ve personally experienced, I wanted to feel represented and seen. If I feel that way, I presume other women do too. The story really grew from there.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have narcolepsy, and one of the aspects of that condition is that you slip into REM suddenly throughout the day. I was already lucid dreaming; but now I see my characters acting out scenes like in a movie. I watch; and sometimes they do or say things that I don’t expect. Then I have to write it down quickly!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I decided to write romance novels, I went to the Amazon lists and ready widely across genres. I read at least fifty books in a few months. When I was in college (*cough* twenty-five years ago *cough*), I had read all the old school romance writers. I wanted to see what creative things authors were doing now. I’m inspired by many of them. There isn’t just one or two that I could point to.

What are you working on now?
I’m completing revisions to my third novel in my Thunderstruck series titled All the Ways We’re Wrong. Ava Blum is a successful romcom actress coming to terms with being divorced and turning forty. Killian Kelly lives alone in a mountain cabin while on assignment for the forestry service. When Ava decides to spend a few days alone in the mountains, she gets caught in a mudslide. Killian saves her, and they have to survive the mountain together without killing each other.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, free book promotions has had the greatest impact on read through and Kindle Unlimited activity.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you want to sell books, treating your writing like a business. Set goals and deadlines, and learn how to do more than craft. Craft is important; but you need both skill sets to be successful at this.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I was ever told was to practice “radical self-acceptance.” I’m doing the best, I can, and there’s nothing more that I can do than that.

What are you reading now?
Since I read several books a week, the answer to this changes almost daily. I typically read both business books and romance novels.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m currently working on a schedule of publishing four books per year. I’m planning a fourth book in my Thunderstruck series for January. That’s in its infancy, so that’ll be my next obsession.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
There’s a good chance that I would choose my own books first. I know that sounds weird or narcissistic, but I like to read parts of my past books here and there. It’s like catching up with a family member or a friend. I remember writing it, of course; but it’s an entirely different experience to just sit and enjoy reading the book after completion, especially after some time has passed and I don’t remember every word as intimately.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I recently released my first novel, Flesh & Fangs this June 2023. I’m currently working on the third in the series! I live in Alabama with my husband and two children.l, and I’ve been writing all of my life.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Flesh & Fangs is the first in The Divine Articles series. It is a fey romance, which inspired the “fangs” portion and it follows the MFC Rhen who has been forced to use her body to provide for herself and her mother, hince the “flesh” portion.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write really late at night. Mornings suck. So I wip out my laptop at 3 am and plug in my headphones and tippy type away. I guess that’s not unusual, but I have a weird enough personality so that has to count for something.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
SJM and Cassandra Clare both inspired me a lot. I grew up reading their books, and as they grew, so did I. But they’re have been so many other that I couldn’t begin to list them all.

What are you working on now?
I sent the sequel to my editor a while ago, and I’m working on both the third book, Hellfire & Hearts, and a spin-off with a Demon lord and a witch called Familiar Darkness.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use TikTok mostly because I get the most traction, but I have several social media platforms. Honestly, just posting regularly has helped me the most.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just do it. Don’t worry if it’s sloppy. Hell, sometimes I have to put (name here) because I haven’t decided yet. That’s okay. Because the only thing worse than a terrible first draft is a blank page.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can’t please everyone. I knew when I sent my manuscript off that it wasn’t meant for everyone. Some readers eat up trigger warnings and some will shame you for writing that sort of material. Write for yourself first, because I promise if YOU don’t like what you’re writing, it will show.

What are you reading now?
Currently working through my stack of BL manga, but I’m reading The Stolen Heir in between.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Oh I don’t plan on stopping writing anytime soon. I have a book signing set at Barnes & Noble at the end of the month!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Coming down hard with the tough ones, huh? I would probably grab a copy of ACOMAF, Clockwork Princess, and gotta have a classic in there somewhere so I’ll say—- Jane Eyre. If I was a smart woman I’d say an instructional book on how to build a boat, right? Ha! Time alone with just me and my books sounds pretty great, though.

Interview With Author Jason Baker

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a career military officer, but I also love writing. A couple of years ago, upon learning of some ancestors’ service in the Civil War, I was motivated to write my first book: “Chicago To Appomattox.” I turned my research and their stories into a narrative non-fiction account of their service and place in the greater war.

“The Ace’s Bounty” had always been an idea in the back of my head and is my first novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, and first novel, is “The Ace’s Bounty.” The story follows two brothers returning home from the Civil War, fighting poverty. When they encounter a U.S. Marshal looking for deputies, they take the work but soon realize it means coming to grips with their own relationship, who they became in the war, and facing a haunted past.

I had some ancestors who fought in the Civil War, but only one returned. As I learned about the lives of their fellow soldiers who came home, I wondered about those who weren’t as successful, struggled to adapt, or didn’t come home. I’ve always enjoyed Western-style novels and decided to combine those two elements.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Music is essential to my writing. I will sit down, knowing roughly what the scene or chapter I want to write is, and then put on music that fits the moment or mood I am going for.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
“The Sister’s Brothers” by Patrick deWitt was a novel that gave me the confidence a “brothers” story could work, albeit very different types of novels (not to mention him being much more talented than I am!) I’m also a big fan of “True Grit” by Charles Portis. Again, not being in the same world of writing skill, I enjoy the Western “road story,” justice-seeking novel.

What are you working on now?
I’ve already begun a follow-on to “The Ace’s Bounty” that continues the story but could stand alone. I’ve also started to outline a longer, more substantial novel that would be almost an Ocean’s 11-type story in a Western, post-war setting.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have come to use my author’s Instagram page for a lot of promotion. When I wrote “Chicago To Appomattox” I posted many photos with stories and facts related to historical dates. Many of them related to the book, but many did not. I gained a lot of followers that way, who were probably more interested in the history and photos than the book.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
The story won’t come if you don’t start writing. I am not a complete outline for every scene writer, but I “create a roadmap. I find this planning to be more manageable; however, if you start writing and let it come to you. Maybe you have an idea for a beginning, ending, or middle scene–write it! The writing you do, and the characters you develop, will begin to tell you the rest of the story.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Your plan is your plan.” That advice was given to me in my professional “day job” life, but I think it works for creating a novel. There are many templates for outlining, story-arcs, character development, and marketing. There are some baseline “this is how it works,” when it comes to writing and selling a novel, but for the most part, you can put your creative mark on it!

What are you reading now?
“Nothing Like It In The World,” by Stephen Ambrose. I plan to incorporate westward expansion, and the building of the transcontinental railroad into my next novel, and Ambrose’s book is a fantastic story of all the events and characters that went into the railroad building.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing is not my day job, so honestly, what’s next for me is taking notes on how my first novel launch goes, taking in the feedback from my story, and gameplan what is next for a follow-on book.

Interview With Author Melissa Knight

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My dream when I was growing up was to either be a spy or run a dog kennel, but I settled on teaching kids, not a bad compromise! I have taught kindergarteners all the way up to high school seniors, working most of the time with disabled students.

I love writing from the perspective of a high school student, and wanted to create a character who would approach the normal ups and downs of being a teenager with a Christian perspective. In my High School 101 Series a variety of topics are covered, from first love and romance to discussing premarital sex, family trauma and grief. Though sensitive stuff is reflected on, the books are still clean and positive! The High School 101 Series has four books so far, and the fifth is in progress.

On the personal side, I’m an oil patch wife currently living in West Texas. My own two kids are on their own and building their lives, which makes me happy though I’m currently searching for a puppy to “mother” a bit. My husband and I love exploring state and national parks, eating good food and just hanging out together.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Breaking News”, Book Four in the High School 101 Series. Each book in the series is loosely centered around a different high school class which most teens take or are familiar with, and in “Breaking News” this is a Journalism/Newspaper class. Each chapter begins with a quote which is both relevant to the class itself and also to the things going on in Casey’s life (the main character).

Here are the classes focused on in the other books:
Book 1, “Feelin’ The Chemistry” – Chemistry, of course!
Book 2, “Just The Facts”- English
Book 3, “Follow The Signs”- Driver’s Ed

Book 5 will be called “Making History” and you can probably guess what that class will be!

Define “unusual”.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I loved the “Christy Miller” series by Robin Jones Gunn, as well as her other series and stand-alone novels. The Mitford Series by Jan Karon is a favorite. The Bible is, and always will be, my north star and guide to the only success that matters in the end.

What are you working on now?
Book 5, “Making History!”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning how to do this and welcome all tried-and-true suggestions!

Pray, write, repeat. Have fun with your writing! It’s hard, but try not to take yourself too seriously.

Interview With Author M. J. Lau

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a former middle school English teacher and I have written five books so far. My first book, The Buried Few, is a standalone dystopian novel. The next three books are part of a series (The Virtual Realms), and they blend sci-fi and fantasy for a middle grade audience (particularly teen boys who tend to choose video games over books).

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, Unburnt, is the first in a new fantasy trilogy, The Firebrand Chronicles. I have always been a huge fan of fantasy, so this story has been percolating in my brain for years. When I finally got around to writing it, I was a dad with three kids, so the importance of family quickly became a key theme in the book. Unlike most of the fantasy I read, which is epic and filled with a huge cast of characters, Unburnt is much more focused on one family and their struggles against the backdrop of empire-wide turmoil. I wanted to explore all the elements of fantasy that I love — magic, exotic locations, a different pace of life — but also bring in the timeless struggles of a father trying to do what’s best for his wife and kids.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I prefer to write standing up. I do much better when I write by hand first, then type (typing usually makes me think my writing is “finished,” so I’m less likely to make changes). I always write in blue ink — in fact, I try to always use the same kind of pen: a Pilot G-2 .07. I’m sure their sales will skyrocket now from my unpaid endorsement! Oh, I also do a lot of voice-to-text, especially if I’m on a walk or driving when an idea hits me. Like many people, my thoughts tend to move faster than my hands, so I love being able to capture my ideas through speech so I do lose them.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The first author I followed consistently was Piers Anthony; I read all his Xanth novels, plus his Incarnations of Immortality series. I’m currently most eager to read more of George R. R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss, the two titans of fantasy right now. I also love classic literature; I’ve read everything by Steinbeck and Hemingway, plus I’m a lifelong Shakespeare fan. My favorite novels include The Catcher in the Rye, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Slaughterhouse Five, and The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. These books stand out to me because of their unique styles and storylines, as well as their powerful and distinctive voices. More than anything, I strive to match their creativity and ability to hook a reader.

What are you working on now?
I tend to bounce around between writing projects so that I don’t burn out by focusing too much on one of them. That said, I do have to buckle down and put in the work on a given book for a while or I’d never complete any of them! So, I will soon be dedicating my time to the sequel to Unburnt, tentatively titled Undrowned.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Despite writing for six years now, I’m new to the promotion/marketing game. I’m working my way through Nick Stephenson’s excellent “Your First 10K Readers” program, and I’m starting to dip my toes in the marketing strategies. So far, I’ve used some Amazon ads, Facebook ads, and Substack. I’m hoping to soon begin cross-promoting with other authors so that I can build a bigger email list and reach interested readers more directly.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write something every day — it doesn’t have to be anything great, but maintaining that practice helps the good stuff come to the surface. Make sure you balance your time between writing and reaching an audience; writing can be a very lonely task, and you need to stay connected to people to remember who you’re do it for (and what they respond to). Lastly, read as much as you can. Read in your genre to absorb techniques, and read about writing and publishing to gain the best insights from those who have already achieved what you’re trying to do.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You can’t edit a blank page.” Get something — anything — down on paper so you can move forward. Writing is really a series of processes: drafting, revising, editing.

What are you reading now?
Just like my writing, I tend to bounce between several books at the same time. I am currently reading Cultural Amnesia by Clive James, The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson, and I just picked up Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am dedicating these next six months to finishing my next novel, while also trying to grow my fanbase for my existing work. It will be a while before I have another book out, but I’m always publishing something on my blog, Substack, or Kindle Vella, which helps keep me motivated, productive, and connected with readers.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This might seem like cheating, but one of the books I would bring is my huge “Collected Works of William Shakespeare,” which has all 37 of his plays. Practically speaking, I’d also bring “The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook,” so I’d know how to find food, water, and shelter. I’d also bring “A Wise Man’s Fear” by Patrick Rothfuss, with the hopes that he would have the sequel done by the time I got off the island! Lastly, I’d bring a big empty notebook so I could write everyday (with a blue ink pen, of course!).

My name is Jeremy Terry and I have lived my whole life in the state of Florida. I published my debut novel Dreams of the Dead in 2012 and have published three other long fiction works.

Wendigo. The story is inspired by a tabletop role playing session with a group of friends and movies such as the Indiana Jones series.

Typical answer, I began with Stephen King. I learned to love reading with his works. I also find that Clive Barker and Ray Bradbury inspire me with the lyrical quality of their prose. It is truly beautiful.

I have a novella ninety percent complete and a novel out for consideration with a publisher.

I am seeking book reviews and promoting my newest book on social media.

Persevere to the end. Don’t give up your work for a bad job. Finish, let it sit for a few weeks or a month, then go back to it with fresh eyes. Refine it, polish it. Don’t give up! Writing a book is hard, but worth it.

I just released my book which is available on print and other online channels such as Amazon and Okadabooks.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of my book is Leadership GOT BORN – A practical toolkit for aspiring leaders and mentors. It is a literary work borne out of over three decades of experience in academia and industry. The original material developed further into a book have been tested and proven in mentoring sessions with my mentees with outstanding results. In particular, the last chapter of the book comprises of useful nuggets from seasoned mentors, taught leaders and senior executives in diverse industries.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My unique writing style took after my innate ability to adapt acronyms and mnemonics for expounding leadership (and management) philosophies. This helps readers retain the principles being taught and makes it easy for them to practice and teach others.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are many leadership books that shaped my worldview. Some of my favorite authors are J.C Maxwell, Myles Munroe, Stephen Covey, Robin Sharma and Simon Sinek to mention but few.

What are you working on now?
I am in the process of writing the layout for my next leadership book. It promises to inspire productivity and foster personal effectiveness of anyone who engages the book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Since the book was released online on Amazon and Okadabooks, I have relied on self-promotion of the printed version comprising of hardcover and paperback copies until I found Awesome Gang via Google search engine. For now, Awesome Gang is my best bet in terms of book promotion.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, new authors should seek advise from book coaches or frontline authors to avoid pitfalls. Every step of the way in book publishing is crucial hence require intentional focus and discipline to execute.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
A book released without adequate promotion is not different from that which has never been published. Taking ones’ book from obscurity to the lime-light require effective and efficient promotion or marketing.

What are you reading now?
Leadership GOT BORN of course. I am so fascinated about the project and the eventual product that I can’t keep away from the wisdom and life transforming contents of the latest leadership book in town.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Having released this book successfully, I see nothing stopping me from releasing many more to benefit humanity on the journey to achieving my objective of touching lifes positively on a global scale.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Interview With Author Lisa Hopkins

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a 55 year old woman, I have written one book entitled Triggered ReActions Conquered…. I do a podcast every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. I would like to become a speaker on a big stage with many people, earning viable income, I want to be the voice of those who may not have one. I’d like to teach people how to conquer everything that makes them feel like they are nothing. I want to be the light that shows that people don’t have to live in darkness.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
What inspired me to write in my book was the fact that I had gone through so many horrific circumstances, and I wanted to put my pen to paper so that, after my words got on the paper, I could be free. I was inspired to write this book also, because there are so many people hurting and not having a way out of horrific situations. Many people stuff things in and I want to be the one to help bring those things out.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I would not say that my writing habit is unusual, but any time a topic drops into my spirit. I start writing notes automatically to get ready to turn it into a poem. It could be a word or phrases that no one would ever think to write about.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I really like the ratings of James Patterson, and many of the authors that write hot and steamy books with sexual content.

What are you working on now?
Right now I am working on a poem book, I have not decided how many poems will be in the book, but at the end of the year, the last day of December, I will end my poem writing, and proceed to starting a poem book. I think I’m going to call it, mothers poems, unless, God gives me another idea for a title. Nothin

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method for promoting my book, is just merely telling people about the book and giving them the information to make purchases. My book is on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and is sold on many distribution websites, it can also be found in Walmart.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
For any new author, my suggestion would be to learn about web design, making commercials, flyers, and getting your brain out there the best way you know how. It would help to be skilled annoying this information because it helps you to feel confident that you can do anything that comes along with being an author.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice that I have heard is to be the change individually that the world would like to see.

What are you reading now?
Right now I am doing a book club, with my own book and will do four or five more books of others to come.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next, I will be publishing a poem book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring one palm book, a mystery book, and an inspirational book that will help me along the way

Interview With Author C. Britt

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in the midwestern United States with my husband, cat, and two dogs. I like spending time sewing, photographing nature, playing video games, wasting time on the internet, and (of course) dreaming up fictional worlds to write about.

Monstra Inter is my first book, but I’ve written hundreds of short stories. I plan to write more (both books and short stories) in the future!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Monstra Inter. I’m a fan of zombie movies and books, but there are so many things that I wish they’d do a bit differently. So after a while, I decided if I was really so convinced of how these stories “should” be, I’d better just write my own version.

What are you working on now?
I have a rough idea for a fantasy story that would involve several well-known fairy tales. It’s in the very, very early stages right now.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
No matter what you write or how well it’s written, you won’t please everyone. But at the same time, there will be someone out there who enjoys the thing you create. So, write what you enjoy and do your best to ignore the haters. 🙂

Interview With Author Sarah F. Noel

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in London, spent most of my adult life in New York and now live in Grenada in the Caribbean. I’ve published two books in the Tabitha & Wolf Mystery series and am currently writing the third book which will be released in early September.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Singular Woman. As soon as I finished book one, I knew I wanted to keep hanging out with these characters and immediately started book two.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m an early riser and I have a fulltime job (remote). So I wake up around 5 most mornings, make coffee, read the newspaper then try to get at least an hour if not more of writing in before switching computers and starting work.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Deanna Raybourn’s Veronica Speedwell series. And of course, the queen herself, Jane Austen.

What are you working on now?
Book 3, An Independent Woman, and already thinking about book 4.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Spend a bit of money when necessary, and spend it wisely. Look at the data. Which sites are referring people to your website (Awesome Gang is a great referrer)? What are you doing with those people once they’re there?

Do you have any advice for new authors?
First, decide if you want to write as a passion project or as a business. You’re more than welcome to write a heartfelt memoir with a very niche audience, but then accept that sales may not follow. If you want to write as a business, then write a good read in a niche that people are actually buying books in. A great way to find that out is with a tool I recently purchased, Publisher Rocket. Using this tool, took the guessing out of a lot of my Amazon related activities. Follow the data and tailor your naming conventions and your marketing activities towards where there’s an audience.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write what you like to read.

What are you reading now?
I write historical mysteries and I read historical mysteries. I’ve always got at least one on the go.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working with a narrator on the audiobook of book 1, A Proud Woman. I’m hoping to do audiobooks for the whole series eventually.

Interview With Author KJ Heier

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
As the first full-length collection I’ve written and actually published, you could call it a literary miracle. If you know anything about authors and aspiring writers, you know that ninety percent of our work never sees the light of day. I have an entire graveyard of wishful thinking and would-be best sellers collecting dust, pleading with me to end their miserable existence. Most of them deserve their fate, unless the world suddenly craves an apocalyptic robot-meets-outer-space love saga.

And I’m guessing they’re not.

This makes The Nightmare Gazette my official debut as an author as well as a horror fiction writer, and I’m thrilled about the pressure that this brings. There’s nothing like having readers expect great things and then dashing those hopes to keep a writer on their toes. The collective disappointment of producing nothing is the type of motivation that makes us type furiously away instead of eating another bonbon.

Not that I know anyone under the age of eighty who eats bonbons, by the way.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent and, currently, my only book, is “The Nightmare Gazette”, a collection of short horror stories that are more in the realm of flash fiction and are written in the second-person narrative. This places the reader as the protagonist or, in many cases, the victim, as they unwittingly dive into one terrifying, life-threatening scenario after the next.

All in good fun, of course, but heads will roll.

At last, I found a niche in short stories because I have an attention span of a chihuahua and it appears they are just short enough that I’m able to come up with a captivating beginning, middle, and end before I get bored of my own ramblings. As to why I chose horror, your guess is as good as mine. I must have an affinity for the macabre, or at least enough of an ego to think I do. I also enjoy Halloween, and I studied European History at my university, which just screams “darkness and terror”, does it not?

I would not consider myself an expert on horror, although it is one of my favorite genres to read. I appreciate the unsettled, open-endedness to the stories, which in many ways imitates life. In reality, no one’s story, up until death, has a definitive, happy ending. It goes on after the curtain comes down and the final theme plays. Life goes on, and sometimes Act 1’s lovebirds end up bludgeoning each other with sledgehammers.

In other words, horror is much less one-note than I believe other genres lend themselves to be, and the challenge of trying to find each individual reader’s “tingle” – those specific frights and scenarios that terrify them the most – is delightful.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I find myself writing at my best when Mars is in retrograde, the clock has just struck midnight, and the ghosts in my attic decide to throw a dance party. Their vibrations inspire me and I howl at the moon like a crazed writer, obsessed. The words spark and flow from my fingertips, turning into pure literary gold.

No, actually, I’m very boring as far as writers go, and I simply need an extremely quiet place to write devoid of interruptions, and a few hours to myself. It’s my magical formula for getting into the writing zone, as long as my writing session is not cut short. It’s generally awful as a writer to feel inspired and not be able to put those thoughts on paper when the inspiration calls. If I can’t get to it until later, my writing often falls flat.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve actually been inspired by the “Choose Your Own Adventure” series when it comes to the writing style of my novel. Writing in second-person is an unusual choice, but I do feel it creates greater immersion for the reader and can, when done correctly, increase the intensity of horror by putting the reader into the story themselves.

My writing isn’t particularly similar to many of the contemporary horror novels today, nor would I want to name a specific well known author and embarrass myself by comparing my stories to them. But, given the nature of short stories, The Nightmare Gazette does have similarities to the television classic “The Twilight Zone”, a wildly successful series that has transcended decades and still manages to frighten modern viewers. I would love to be able to one day say my stories were timelessly unnerving in the same way.

What are you working on now?
I believe this is every writer’s favorite question if they have a novel on the horizon they’re itching to promote, and their most dreaded if they’re standing before you empty-handed. I have to admit that I’m in the latter category, although I have many ideas swirling about, each one circling the drain. I assume whichever idea manages to hold out the longest will win, but do expect to see another book from me in the next year or two. Now that I have a taste for it, it’s hard to let it go.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m more of a “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” kind of a person. Not remotely effective, but I tend to think it’s in true writer fashion. Because this is my first published story collection, I unfortunately don’t have any sagely marketing advice to offer fellow writers, but I will say in a world that is just as virtual now as it is tangible, it’s probably a very good idea to develop a social media presence and personal brand. My suggestion definitely falls within the realm of “do as I say and not as I do”, but doesn’t all the best advice?

The other tip I can offer is to build a community. Start local, if you can. Attend farmer’s markets in the summer and book fairs in the winter. Establish a home base right where you live, with the people around you whom you instantly have something in common with just by being in the same space. They may become your biggest supporters and can help provide free publicity by spreading the news of your book online to their family and friends.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do. Not. Over. Edit. Your Book.

Editing is extremely important. It’s possible this cannot be emphasized enough, but your sanity as a writer and ability to actually publish the book you’ve poured months, and perhaps even years of your life into cultivating is equally as important. If you have the common writer’s trait of perfectionism, re-reading and re-writing the same parts of your novel ten times is not effective, and it will lead to frustration and, eventually, your resignation.

Allow others, despite how difficult, to provide you with constructive criticism, and put your focus onto the actual writing of the novel. Often, the way you view your story is with a much more critical eye than the way other people see it, and your book may never see the light of day if you don’t push past the editing phase. Rather than editing each section after you write it, move on until the book is finished, and then dedicate time to the editing process.

My other piece of advice regards book reviews. If you’re a sensitive introvert, bad reviews can be crushing. They can even prevent you from writing in the future. If you’re on this extreme end of the spectrum, find someone you can trust who can balance honesty with support to read the initial reviews for you and pass on the criticisms that are actually constructive, and toss the rest. Even if you write a best-seller, there will always be critics. There is not an author dead or alive that is beloved by everyone. Ask a little-known poet named William Shakespeare.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Some of the best advice I have ever heard isn’t specific to writing, although it is relevant. The advice is this: Never stop learning.

That’s it. Never stop learning and growing as a person because this will cause you, much like water, to stagnate. You’ll actually regress over time, and life is all about progression. Continued learning, though difficult at times, is healthy. It prolongs life, reduces prejudice, and opens the world to you. Learning is one of the keys to happiness and contributes to the happiness of others when you share it.

But I want to add to this. Never allow what you’ve learned to blind you to what you don’t know. No one is all knowing. No one has all the answers, and the moment we begin to believe that we do is when we stop learning and moving forward. Be wise, but be humble.

What are you reading now?
I’m actually listening to a lot of horror podcasts right now, which is auditory reading. Some of my favorite miniseries are found on Spotify and include “The Call of the Void” by Acorn Arts & Entertainment, “Halfmoon Chronicles” by Bad Address Media, “The Elmwood Strain” from Violent Hour Media, and “Restart” produced by BBC Radio 4.

As for traditional reading, I’ve been immersed in Brandon Sanderon’s “The Stormlight Archive” epic fantasy series, which is incredibly detailed and his power of world-building is masterful. It’s not unusual for me to indulge in the more guilty pleasures as well of young-adult reading and the many emotionally-charged love triangles the genre always produces.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Ideally, I would like to increase my readership base and continue to provide stories, be they horror or otherwise, for people to indulge in. Like any writer, writing is a compulsion rather than a choice, so if I am to go on writing, I may as well publish what I do. Writing is not only therapeutic, but when I don’t write for a long time, it feels like going without water. My hope is to publish a full-length novel in the near future and/or produce Kindle Vellas on Amazon publishing, which is a format similar in my mind to a podcast miniseries. Having already dabbled in writing and producing a season of my own horror podcast, called “Poltergeist Scary Stories”, I think it would be familiar territory.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Considering that Robinson Crusoe would probably strike a little close to home (and I’ve never read it), I’ll leave it off this list. However, it would be remiss of me as a self-described nerd not to include the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, or “Harry Potter” by J.K. Rowling. In addition to these classics, I find myself repeatedly returning to the tearjerker that is “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom. For my horror choice, it would likely have to be “Interview with a Vampire” or another book in the series by Anne Rice, which deserves all the recognition and fame it’s received.

Interview With Author W.M. (William) Leesman

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up in both Alberta and Oregon. The two divergent cultures led to a well-rounded view of the world.
Baseball was a passion with opportunity. I played in several national championships at different levels and pitched for Canada in a World Championship when I was 18.
I opened a bookstore in my early 20s. And was later drawn into the numismatics world by a friend and baseball colleague, where I worked for 10 years. During that time, I started writing and met the love of my life, Jacki.
The next several years included several career changes and added two very special individuals to our family. Our children brought a different perspective into our life goals and provided an opportunity for growth and significant change. Organizations like Special Olympics became a part of our life. You can find us volunteering as a Special Olympics coaches and referees.
All of these things have brought a breadth of experience to finish the novel I started in my 20s.
I currently lives in Calgary, AB with my family, where we enjoy events centered around movies and sports. I am also a full-time Calgary Realtor®.
I have one completed novel with three more in various stages of completion.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Judas Legacy is my debut and current novel. Working in the numismatic world, I was exposed to many old and rare coins. Dealing with those relics, I began to wonder who would have handled those coins over the years and what events they might have been a part of. That led me to conceive of a thriller based on ancient relic coins with a mystical power.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to put music on while I write. I have an eclectic taste in music and with the headphones on, I can escape into the mood of the music.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King, Robert Ludlum, Dan Brown, James Rollins, James Patterson and Michael Connelly are just a few of the authors who have had a large influence in my life. However, my taste in books are as eclectic as my taste in music so I get inspiration from many books and authors.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on several manuscripts. First and foremost is the sequel to The Judas Legacy and part of my Apocalypse Series. The title is Kayne’s Revenge.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Thus far we have focused on Amazon and Goodreads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I build a timeline for each character using a day planner. That allows me to build out a rough idea of the storyline and then the individual chapters just need the details.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write everyday.

What are you reading now?
I have several books on the go – Corktown by Ty Hutchison, The Future is History by Masha Gessen, and The Brethren by John Grisham

What’s next for you as a writer?
To finish The Apocalypse Series, follow up with a fictional memoir of a family with special needs and a dystopian sci-fi thriller.
