Interview With Author Lori Soard
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi everyone! My name is Lori Soard and I live in southern Indiana right up from the Ohio River. The town I’ve from has about 3,000 people, so it makes sense that I write small town stories. I’m married to my high school sweetheart. We have two grown daughters and two wonderful granddaughters. I didn’t think I could love anyone more than my children until I met the grands. It’s a love like no other love there is.
I write mostly inspirational romances, but I also work on nonfiction, young adult and have a mystery series in the pipeline (not yet released). I’ve had 20 books published, but a few are not currently available, including one on adoption stories because it is extremely outdated at this point.
I adore animals and have two miniature dachshunds and four cats.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Dial Q for Quincy’s Hope is book #19 in the multiauthor series called You Are on the Air. My book is set in Madison, Indiana. My youngest doxie, Dolly Pawton, inspired me. I love her but she’s a rotten puppy that has required hours upon hours of professional training and still need more and I kept thinking about adding a mischievous dog to this latest tale. Dolly is doing much better by the way, and I am the ONLY person allowed to say she is rotten because she is also the sweetest creature alive.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really unusual, but I like to listen to music while I write. I will choose music that fits the mood of the scene. If I’m writing something sad, I might listen to ballads. Writing something happy, I will find a Pandora playlist of upbeat music, etc.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jane Austen is one of my favorites, as she is many other people’s. I love the book PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and read it again and again. I also like her book EMMA. I wouldn’t dare name too many current writers as I know I’ll forget someone but I really enjoy anything by Dean Koontz. He is a very skilled writer. I read very eclectically.
What are you working on now?
I just finished Dial Q for Quincy’s Hope and have been focused on promotions, but I have book # 4 in my Cupid’s Crossing series outlined and will start work on it next. I already have the first two chapters, so will be jumping back in.
When I come up with an idea, I often sit down and start the story for a chapter or two and then add notes where I want to go. I then have the information for later when I’m ready to complete the novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a newsletter where I reach out to my readers first. Then, I just look at what seems to be popular with other authors currently and I’ll try a number of different ads and tactics to see what clicks.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you don’t love writing for the sake of writing, run. If you do love it, then don’t let anything or anyone every discourage you. If your story reaches just one person and makes them think in a new way or offers some comfort, you’ve accomplished something fantastic with your words.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Sit your butt in the chair. There was actually a book way back that I read, and I forget who wrote it but it was called “Do It: Let’s Get Off Our Buts.” The advice is solid.
I also really enjoyed the audio book for “The Energy Bus.” It is a story of how your attitude impacts everyone around you and can change your life. It resonated with me. It’s so easy to get into negative thought patterns. I’m actually working on some I’ve gotten into when driving. I just say all kinds of nasty things to other drivers (they can’t hear me, of course) and I fuss and fume. It’s ridiculous really. So, my technique is to try to be aware and when I says something like, “You are a maroon,” I try to change it and say, “I bet that’s a nice lady driving that car and she just had a bad day and didn’t even realize she cut me off.” It does EVENTUALLY work. LOL
What are you reading now?
Colleen Hoover’s REMINDERS OF HIM (fiction)
FAST FEAST REPEAT (nonfiction)
LITTLE WOMEN (audio)
I always have a fiction and nonfiction book going. I also always have a book I’m listening to in the car, usually something with my grandgirl Mia. She is LOVING Louisa May Alcott so far. She asks to listen to it. She’s four.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I currently work a full-time job writing copy during the day. My goal is to spend more time on my novels. I’m just trying to figure out what that looks like and still make a decent living. I’ll keep you posted.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible
Pride and Prejudice
Some type of survival guide
Some type of using plants for medicine guide
