Interview With Author Devrie Spaulding
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! All my life, I have loved reading. I chose to be an aircraft mechanic instead. Go figure. I do dabble in a lot of writing. My website (searchable by my name) has all my short stories, poems, and much more. I still live and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. I traveled all over Texas with the aircraft industry but always came back home. My oldest daughter lives in Missouri making the life she has always wanted. My other two daughters still live with me and our many cats and dogs. I really am the crazy cat lady but just know they live a very happy, healthy, and fat life. I have one book currently published, another book in a different series complete, and two more in work.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called “Paranormal Sisters: The Eight Rays of the Moon”. Honestly, my sister and I had a lot of influence on the characters. We got into quite a bunch of shenanigans growing up. The paranormal aspect of the book was inspired by Native American legends and so many spooky things that I adore.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to handwrite my books first in a notebook. Then, I will move forward to the computer. It just seems more personal that way.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Wow, there are so many. Of course, Tolkien, Anne Rice, Terry Brooks, Michael Anderle, and Steven King. I have also found a love for self-published authors such as Auburn Tempest, M.M. Crumley, John Corwin, and Bilinda Sheehan. Now, with those mentioned, the humor and fun I found in Rick Riordan’s books really inspired me the most. He is a hoot. I don’t think I have a main favorite genre but paranormal, fantasy, and anything having to do with the Eldritch Terrors are on the top of the list.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on book two of both my paranormal one and book two of my fantasy series I have yet to publish.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I would have to say the best method or website to promote your book is finding others to read and review your work. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is never to give up. This is your dream and no one gets to tell you to ever put it down. Just for reference, look up how many times a famous author was rejected. It puts it into perspective. However, now you can self-publish just as easily. So, keep going.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
What are you reading now?
Right now, I am chomping at the bit for the next installment of The Immortal Doc Holliday by M.M. Crumley and Case Files of an Urban Druid by Auburn Tempest.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next for me is to simply keep writing and getting my books read. These characters are really bossy about the world knowing their stories.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Anything by Rick Riordan is always fun to read many times. I can never get bored.
