Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a lawyer turned thriller writer. Having been a fan of thrillers all my life, I finally achieved my ambition to write one when I completed my first novel, Deep Secret. As I still work as a lawyer and thus with limited time to research, I decided to write about something I knew about so the book is set in the world of horse racing. However the adult movie industry is also featured and my friends have teased me about how much research I had to do for that part of the book! When the two worlds clash, it provides a great background for fixed races, murder, blackmail and kidnapping while the lead character, a champion jockey strives to win the one big race that has eluded him.
My latest book, The Marbella Project, is a different type of thriller with non stop action throughout as a father seeks revenge for the brutal murder of his son by the Russian mafia on the Costa del Sol in Spain. This is no ordinary father. He is a former special forces soldier and he recruits a former colleague to help him on his mission to destroy the organisation responsible for the death of his son. The action switches from Spain to Moscow and London before returning to Spain for the dramatic climax. The Marbella area, where I have a holiday home forms a glamorous backdrop for the action.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Marbella Project was inspired by my familiarity with the area where the book is mainly set and I suppose it’s probably comparable with the film Taken although it’s a revenge mission rather than a rescue. A number of people have said that it would make a great film and I would pick Jason Statham to play the lead!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I have in mind the basics of the story and the rest just comes to me while I type.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a big fan of Lee Child. Maybe The Marbella Project could become the first in a series. Some reviewers have likened my lead character to Jack Reacher but I’m not so sure. Reacher is unique. I think my twist could be for both my characters, Dan and Jimmy, to go on more missions or ‘projects’ together.
What are you working on now?
I’m devising the story for a sequel to The Marbella Project. Dan and Jimmy will be commissioned to take on what the police cannot achieve…..
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Twitter and book websites but you need to know your target audience.. Deep Secret should appeal to horse racing fans and The Marbella Project to ex pat residents on the Costa del Sol and the thousands of holiday makers who visit the area.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Have something about your book which will appeal to a certain audience as well as the public at large and realise that if you don’t put as much effort into marketing the book as in writing it, it will won’t sell however good it is.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When I became a lawyer which leads teams, I was advised to do just that, lead. People are looking to you to lead the way and make decisions. Don’t dither, don’t agonise, decide. Even if you turn out to be wrong.
What are you reading now?
The latest book by Terence Strong but it’s not with me now and I can’t remember the title!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully writing more projects for Dan Green and Jimmy Johnson.
What is your favorite book of all time?
That’s tough but up there has to be The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy.
