Interview With Author Eli Felix
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am not your conventional author: wordy, verbose, well-read, and informed with the desire to wow audiences with their sense of literary genius. I create content from the mind space and then translate it into fictional content from the perspective of my inner self (heart space), only because I desire to indulge and fulfill something within me. I have done a few things in life worth mentioning. I educated myself with purpose and then set about trying to fulfill that purpose only to realize that it was not for me just a few years down the line. I then established and ran my own business and let go of it because of certain conditions that I was not willing to uphold. I suppose it was then that I gained my sense of self and decided to write. Testament is my first book and it will not be my last.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Testament. I attended a Christian church school in the years that I was studying. It was there that I was introduced to religion. I have never been religious. I am more spiritual. Whilst in school I learnt that the son of God, Jesus Christ walked amongst us. I was enamored with the concept that a living person made all those miracles happen. I am a pragmatic man; I believe that all those years ago Jesus Christ was more spiritually evolved than others around him. He achieved everything conceptually and with practicality. I decided then that I would draw inspiration from this and create a story around it. Parts of Testament is based on the events in the bible but the book is a spiritual undertaking conceptualized as a fantasy genre novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. Most unusual. I sometimes write entire chapters only to re-write them as the concept evolves in my head. Creativity can be cumbersome. At times it was hard to let go of the content I had created, but something better developed out of all those re-writes. I would say to any author, the rewrite is your best friend. Don’t fear letting go of your best chapter. It can only get better.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Prince by Machiavelli, and The Godfather by Puzo.
These three books taught me more about life than any other book.
What are you working on now?
I am working on my sequel Testament: Unbecoming.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’d say there are many websites each with their unique offerings. It all depends on your budget. I wont name any but Awesome Gang is one. I have high hopes for Awesome Gang.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. Don’t worry if everyone you could have possibly queried has rejected you. Change everything. I was rejected by a lot of literary agencies before I decided to re-brand my book and create another 50000 words of content. It took me a few rounds before I was accepted.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Remember to be prepared for every kind of situation. Be always outnumbered but never outgunned!
What are you reading now?
I am reading Ken Follett, A Column of fire. I love the way he tells stories.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My second book. I am already 5000 words in.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. The first four books in the series, so that I can finally focus on his style. You need patience to read Robert Jordan. I will need patience on a deserted Island so I will be reading his books.
