Interview With Author Kate Hill
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a vegetarian New Englander who started writing many years ago for pleasure. I’ve written over 100 novels, novellas, and short stories. I also enjoy writing poetry. Some of my hobbies include exercising, crafts, watching horror movies, and spending time with my family and pets.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Warrior Priest is about a free-spirited priestess from a new age commune and a warrior priest from a strict religion who must learn about each other as part of a cultural exchange between their worlds. It was inspired by my love of opposites attract romance.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure if I have any really unusual habits. When I’m writing a first draft, I enjoy listening to music that reminds me of the story, but for any other part of the writing process, I prefer quiet.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There’s so many. Some of my favorite books are the Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Bloodwind by Charlotte Boyett-Compo, Alien Blood by Joan D. Vinge, A Mate for the Lone Wolf by D. K. Taylor, and the Scarlet Gospels by Clive Barker. I also love Edgar Allan Poe’s works. I could list so many more.
What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on the final edits for the second book in my Ancient Blood vampire series, the Darkness Therein. The series was previously published and I’m re-editing the books for re-release. I’m also nearly finished with Manticore, the last book in my Confessions series from Changeling Press.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m honestly not sure what works the best. I blog regularly and I enjoy connecting with other readers and writers on Twitter. I also think blog tours are a good way to let people know about your work.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If writing is what you want to do, pretty much nothing will stop you. It’s good to be honest with yourself about why you write and what you want out of it. Everyone has different reasons for writing and different ideas about what success is. For some, it’s to write full time or make a lot of money. For others it’s about telling stories because you enjoy it. There is no right or wrong reason to write, and you can’t measure your success by someone else’s standards.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t try to please everyone because it’s impossible.
What are you reading now?
All Hail the Queen by Stephanie Dargon Luce, From the Dark Place by Mister Construed X, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (again!).
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next I’ll be working on re-edits for my third Ancient Blood book, the Immaculate, and I’m going to start a pair of novellas about twins who live in a land of dreams.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That is a really hard question! I’d probably take them from my list above: the Phantom of the Opera, Frankenstein, the Three Musketeers, and the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe.
