Interview With Author Rachael Wright

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been writing for over a decade and I’ve written eight books. I am a historian and journalist writing for Colorado Politics, the Denver Gazette, and the Colorado Springs Gazette. I’m a member of Scotland’s 1745 Association and I’m obsessed with Scottish History.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book The Twins of Strathnaver is a witchy Outlander meets Ghost Whisperer novel, that was inspired by Scottish folklore of second sight but also the very real events of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I really love writing in the dark, or dim light, because then I can’t get distracted by the room I’m in. I also can’t sit down to write unless the dishes are done, laundry is folded, and the whole house is clean. I also take a lot of breaks because my fingers type faster than my mind is prepared to work.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read The Lord of the Rings when I was thirteen and that became one of the biggest influences on my writing. Since I’m also a massive Regency nerd I just dove into Jane Austen, the Bröntes, and Thomas Hardy. I want my books to feel otherworldly when they take place in different times but also touchable, something’s familiar.

What are you working on now?
I am writing a book that I’m billing as a witchy Claire Fraser falls for Farmer Oak from Far From the Madding Crowd. It’s set in Scotland in 1830 right after the height of the Highland Clearances and the main character has some phenomenal, but untapped magic.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use both Threads and Instagram but I love my own website. I can build a list of people who absolutely want to be in on all the latest details.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up. As the quote goes, art is for the artist. Writing is the same. You write because it simply must be done. There’s no other option. Please don’t give up. It takes a long time to hone your craft and to find where in the world you and your writing belong.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Nunquam dice mori. Never say die. If it’s important to you block everything out and keep going.

What’s next for you as a writer?

Interview With Author Alia Luria

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author, lawyer, knit designer, and artist that loves travel, photography, chronicling my adventures, and meeting new bookish people. I’ve written two science fiction novels, Compendium and Ocularum. Ocularum is coming out later this year. My first collection of personal essays comes is also available for preorder, titled Geri o Shimasu: Adventures of a Baka Gaijin. I also have work published in multiple anthologies, including a personal essay in Women Write Now, which was originally published by Northwest Review, and a craft essay in Pen & Pulse: Essays on Writing, Craft, and the Writer’s Journey.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Geri o Shimasu: Adventures of a Baka Gaijin, and it is a collection of personal essays, haiku, and paintings inspired by and recounting the five months during law school that I lived in Tokyo, Japan. I lived there in 2008, and I’ve always wanted to write a collection of stories about the experience, and 2020, during COVID, with all our travel restrictions, I began thinking about what I wanted to convey and what the experience meant to me.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have the unusual habit when I’m writing personal essays of coming up with the title first and then holding loosely in my mind the general message I want to convey. Then I start to piece together specific story points and events that flesh out that theme. I had a general idea and title for almost all of my essays in Geri o Shimasu before I started writing the stories themselves.

Another unusual writing habit that I have–I sometimes journal in haiku form. I might be laying in bed or driving in my car and be thinking about something that’s happened to me that day or that I notice, and I’ll start composing a haiku about it. Then, I’ll pull out my phone and write it in Ulysses. I have a document called Scrapbook in Haiku for those times.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When it comes to my science fiction writing, Ursula K. LeGuin, Margaret Atwood, and Octavia Butler have been huge influences. I love female classic science fiction writers. I also love Andy Weir and think his brand of writing speaks to me as well on the sci-fi front.

With respect to personal essays and memoir, I’m influenced by authors like David Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Amy Schumer. Generally, I like authors that tackle extremely tough, sensitive or trying topics with humor.

When it comes to haiku, I think that Jack Kerouac is a great American author to look for how we take such a specific art form and make it our own.

What are you working on now?
I am in final edits for Ocularum, my second science fiction novel, and follow up to Compendium. I am also working on a new essay collection of personal essays and craft writings, titled Preposterous Bloodshed, and an as-of-yet untitled novel that brings together political intrigue, economic slavery, and spycraft… in space.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
BookBub used to be an amazing resource for getting my book downloaded and read, but there are so many amazing resources that have popped up since 2015, and I think there’s endless opportunities for writers to be creative in their platform building, whether it’s through Insta and TikTok, through Substack, blog tours, vlogging, or other creative means. The sky’s the limit!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read a lot and read broadly. Some authors will say that they can’t read books by other authors, because it interferes with their authorial voice, but you can’t develop your own voice without learning the nuts and bolts of craft, and you won’t learn either the basics or the advanced techniques of writing without reading, widely. Read a lot. Read critically. Think about what you read. Think about what you liked and didn’t like about what you read and why. Break it down and analyze it. Blog about it or journal about it. But reading lots of types of books and lots of different authors will help you craft your voice and help you understand and apply various perspectives, narrative distances, world building elements, and other things critical to being a writer.

The second piece of advice is write a lot. It doesn’t have to be a novel, a story, or anything. Just sit down, set a timer, ask yourself a question, and start to write. And write about whatever comes out of your head. It can be your grocery list, what you want to binge next on Netflix, why that book you just finished won’t leave your brain. Anything. It’s about training yourself to write with no judgement and no filter. If 500 words of gibberish comes out, well, that’s 500 words of junk you got out of your head for the next time you sit down. And who knows? That random thought could turn into a story idea or a novel or a memoir some day.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you’re feeling down because of criticism, whether it’s a bad review, a particularly harsh workshop session, a rejection letter, or anything, open up your favorite book site, be it Goodreads, Storygraph, or whatever… and find your favorite book. Find one that transformed your life, the one or you can’t live without, and then go their listings. Then, filter by 1-star reviews. Read about what people have to say about your absolute favorite book. Or maybe pick the current NY Times #1 Book and open that listing. Again, click to 1-star reviews. Everyone loves different books. Everyone has different preferences. Take constructive criticism if it makes a point you feel is valid and be open to thinking about that point and what you can do about it, but don’t let criticism crush you. I guarantee your favorite book has numerous haters, and that’s okay. People’s preferences are not your problem. And their personal attacks are definitely not your problem. Take what’s useful and ignore the rest.

What are you reading now?
I just finished The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa and started Goodnight Tokyo by Atsuhiro Yoshida. I have a huge TBR pile of books, but I’m working through some of my magical realism backlog so that I can post close readings and do tiktoks that would appeal to readers of Geri o Shimasu.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working through the final steps of getting Ocularum ready for final edits, then I’ll secure a cover designer to refresh Compendium and Ocularum. I’m also doing a bunch of events this year for the release of Geri o Shimasu and plan on traveling back to Tokyo in September to do readings at my old school and to document my travels for a potential follow-up book of essays.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. LeGuin, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection by Arthur Conan Doyle, and On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King.

Interview With Author Paul Bruno

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have more than 35 years of experience in project management and information technology. Many years ago I became fascinated with the amazing origins of the iconic Jeep automobile. A vehicle that was designed and manufactured in months, not years, to help the Allies emerge victorious against the Nazis and later Japan in World War II. I have written three books, Project Management in History: The First Jeep published in 2014; The Original Jeeps in 2020, updated in 2024, which tells the complete story of early Jeep history through January 1942; and The Original Jeeps in Pictures, published in 2022 that tells the story of early Jeep history in images. My background includes 25 years of research, key site visits, and writing screenplays (non-produced to date) about all the players and challenges faced in producing the first Jeeps. I am now recognized as one of the most knowledgeable living experts on the earliest origins, design, implementation, and worldwide delivery of the Jeep.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Original Jeeps – Expanded Edition. The inspiration for this edition was to update the prior edition of the book to include detailed information on the final phase of early Jeep history from April 1941 to January 1942 and additionally focus on the early Willys Jeeps.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. As a writer of history, the key is excellent research and then being able to organize that research into a coherent narrative.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The greatest book that influenced me is the Bible. I have read all the works of Clive Cussler and the work of Christian authors such as Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll, and Ray Stedman. All have influenced me.

What are you working on now?
My focus now is on a children’s book on the creation of the first Jeep, working title, Banty the Jeep. Also, a second book in my Project Management In History series, Project Management in History: The Willys MB.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
We have a website originaljeeps.com and a Facebook page The Original Jeeps, and social media plays a role. The best method for promoting my books is appearing on Jeep and history-specific podcasts

Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you want to write a book just get started.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Love God, Love Others.

What are you reading now?
I am enjoying the Dirk Pitt novel The Corsican Shadow by Dirk Cussler and The Federalist Papers.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am continuing my work in early Jeep history with a children’s book on the first Jeep and a second book in the Project Management in History series.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
They would include the Bible, War and Peace, A Tale of Two Cities, and Democracy in America.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an electrical and electronics engineer with a profound passion for storytelling. While Fallacy, my mystery thriller, marks the beginning of my self-publishing journey, it is technically not my debut work. I previously authored a quote book and have written another book under an agreement with an app. Writing has always been my creative outlet, and I am thrilled to now share my first self-published novel with readers.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled Fallacy, a mystery thriller that delves into the fragile nature of truth and perception. The inspiration came from my fascination with human psychology, the complexities of trust, and the power of hidden narratives. I wanted to craft a story that keeps readers questioning what they know while exploring the darker facets of reality.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
One of my unusual writing habits is how deeply I immerse myself in my stories. Sometimes, the line between my imagination and reality blurs, and I find myself fully living in the scenes I’m creating. I often visualize my story as if it’s a movie, focusing on every detail, the play of light, the subtle reactions of characters, or even the ambiance of a moment. I also tend to write in bursts of inspiration, often late at night, when the world is quiet, and my thoughts flow most vividly.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve always been a reader before I was a writer. The Shining is my all-time favorite book, it has such a unique ability to blend psychological horror with suspense, which deeply influences my approach to storytelling. I’m also a huge fan of Agatha Christie, whose mastery of intricate plots and character dynamics inspires my writing. Currently, I’m reading The Locked Door by Freida McFadden, a gripping thriller that continues to shape my understanding of tension and narrative depth.

What are you working on now?
At present, Fallacy is my primary focus as I prepare for its release. However, I am also in the midst of preparing for a competitive examination, which has somewhat limited the time I can dedicate to writing. Despite this, I am adept at managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously, allowing me to maintain progress on both my novel and my academic commitments without compromising the quality of either.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ll admit, I’m not very active on social media, and I find the promotion side of things quite challenging. I’m considering hiring a public relations agent to help with the marketing and promotion, but that won’t begin until March. In the meantime, I plan to drop snippets of Fallacy to generate some buzz and give readers a taste of what’s to come. I’m still figuring out the best approach, but I’m excited to see how things unfold as the release date nears.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is simple: just keep writing, and don’t worry about what others think. The creative process is a beautiful journey, and it’s important to embrace it fully without getting caught up in external expectations. Write for yourself, find joy in the act of creation, and trust that the words will come. The more you write, the more you’ll grow as a storyteller, and the more rewarding the journey will be.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“All dreams are within reach. All you have to do is keep moving towards them.” — Viola Davis
Writing, for me, is as natural as breathing, it flows effortlessly. Yet, there are times when completing a project feels like an uphill climb. During those moments, I remind myself that perseverance is paramount. It’s not about immediate results, but about steady progress, and eventually, the dream will materialize if you continue pushing forward.

What are you reading now?
Sadly, I’m too busy to read at the moment, though I have a huge TBR list waiting for me. Sometimes, I wish I could escape to a scenic spot, sip on a cup of coffee, and read for days without any distractions. I even wrote a quote about this imagined scene in my mind: ‘Sometimes, I yearn for nothing more than the comfort of warm tea in one hand and a book in the other. A scenic view and some rare moments of solitude.’

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next for me as a writer, I have another book under contract with an app, which will be self-published once the contract expires at the end of this year. Beyond that, I have several more books planned for the coming years, but they won’t be released until next year. I’m excited to continue evolving as a writer and share these upcoming projects with readers in the future.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That’s a tough question, but if I had to choose, I’d probably bring ‘The Shining’ by Stephen King, since it’s my all-time favorite. I’d also take ‘Mile High’ by Liz Tomforde, which I absolutely loved. Another book that profoundly changed my perspective on life is ‘The Metamorphosis’ by Franz Kafka, his writing deeply moved me, even to tears. While I admire Dostoevsky, Kafka’s work really struck me on an emotional level. Lastly, I’d bring ‘A Court of Silver Flames’ by Sarah J. Maas, as I adore fantasy, and Nesta is such a compelling character. These books would keep me captivated and thoughtfully engaged on the island.

Interview With Author Heather Choate

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Well, where do I start? I’m Heather Choate—professional daydreamer, full-time mom, and part-time dragon whisperer (okay, that last one is only on Tuesdays). I’ve penned my fair share of tales, with Fighting for Our Lives being my most personal and heartfelt. As for numbers, let’s just say I’ve written enough books to make my laptop cry for mercy but not enough to keep me from saying, ‘Just one more!’ Some are adventurous fantasy escapades, others dive deep into life’s rawest battles, but all are fueled by faith, love, and a healthy dose of caffeine.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Fighting for Our Lives: A Mother’s Memoir of Faith and Survival Through Breast Cancer. It’s a deeply personal story that came to life during one of the hardest battles I’ve ever faced—being diagnosed with breast cancer while ten weeks pregnant with my sixth child. The inspiration was my journey through that storm—finding strength in faith, love, and an unyielding will to protect my unborn child. It’s a story of hope, resilience, and that crazy little thing called courage, even when the odds seem stacked against you. It’s proof that even in our darkest moments, the light of faith and family can guide us through

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Absolutely! My writing habits are a little… unconventional. For starters, I do my best work between 3 and 7 a.m., thanks to a charming case of insomnia. While most people are dreaming, I’m wide awake, fueled by tea and sheer determination, crafting worlds and characters in the quiet hours. Bonus: no interruptions! It’s like having the world to myself—just me, my laptop, and the occasional chirping cricket for ambiance. Who needs sleep when you’ve got stories to tell, right?

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m definitely a patchwork quilt of literary influences, and at the center of it all is C.S. Lewis. His ability to weave faith and fantasy together is pure magic—The Chronicles of Narnia practically shaped my childhood. Then there’s Brandon Sanderson, who’s like a masterclass in world-building; I swear, reading his books makes me want to level up my own creativity. And let’s not forget Orson Scott Card. Ender’s Game taught me that stories can be equal parts thrilling and deeply introspective. Between them, I’ve learned that writing isn’t just about creating worlds—it’s about filling them with meaning, heart, and a touch of wonder.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m fully immersed in the Way of the Xaltan series, a Christian dystopian sci-fi mashup that explores what happens when an emotionless society collides with one driven by raw, unrestrained feelings. It’s got rebellion, love, impossible choices, and plenty of heart-pounding twists. I’m also working on a short story collection tied to the series to expand the world and give readers a taste of what’s to come.

Oh, and because I clearly don’t like to sleep, I’m also dabbling in a Christian daily devotional! I love blending faith and storytelling, so why not stretch into a little non-fiction inspiration? It’s like coffee for the soul—except less jittery.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method for promoting my books? Well, Amazon is definitely a big player—it’s like the giant bookshelf of the internet where everyone shops! But I also love connecting directly with readers through my personal website. It’s my cozy corner of the digital world where I share behind-the-scenes content, exclusive freebies, and updates about my latest projects. Plus, it gives me the chance to build meaningful connections with readers who enjoy diving into the worlds I create.

Social media plays a role too—it’s great for engaging with my audience (and occasionally sharing quirky videos of my writing process or my characters coming to life). It’s all about finding ways to keep the journey fun and interactive!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Absolutely—don’t feel like you have to squeeze yourself into a pre-made “box” or follow every so-called rule of writing. The beauty of being an author is that you get to create something uniquely *you.* Break the rules, challenge conventions, and write what sets your soul on fire.

Love what you create, even if it’s different or unconventional, because that passion shines through to readers. The world doesn’t need another cookie-cutter story; it needs *your* story, told in your voice. So, be bold, take risks, and trust the process—even if it feels messy sometimes. And above all, never stop loving the journey.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is to forgive yourself and others. Life is too short to carry the heavy baggage of regret, resentment, or guilt. Forgiveness is freeing—it doesn’t mean forgetting or condoning, but it allows you to move forward without being tethered to the past.

When you forgive yourself, you give yourself permission to grow and learn from your mistakes. And when you forgive others, you reclaim your peace. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. It’s like taking a deep breath after holding it in for far too long.

What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m diving into the 10th book of the Tennis Shoes Among the Nephites series, and wow, talk about an epic time-traveling adventure! It’s like history class on a rollercoaster ride through ancient civilizations—with plenty of heart and faith mixed in.

Oh, and I’m also savoring the Wingfeather Saga! If you love beautifully crafted worlds, quirky humor, and stories brimming with courage, it’s a must-read. Let’s just say my reading list is doing a fantastic job of keeping my imagination fueled and my heart full!

What’s next for you as a writer?
What’s next? Oh, just a small matter of building an entire rebellion—on paper, of course! I’m currently immersed in crafting the Way of the Xaltan series, an epic dystopian saga where faith, family, and courage collide with a world that tries to erase them. Think battles of the heart, mind, and soul, with a side of emotional upheaval and edge-of-your-seat action.

On top of that, I’m also brainstorming ways to connect with readers on a deeper level, through devotionals and stories that inspire hope and ignite passion. Basically, I’m just trying to keep up with my characters and their wild adventures—and maybe sneak in a nap now and then!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island (hopefully with a hammock and plenty of coconuts), my bookish survival kit would include:

The Scriptures – for guidance, strength, and maybe even a few miracles to get me off the island.
Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson – because if I’m stuck, I might as well be swept into an epic world with characters that remind me of the strength in perseverance.
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien – a timeless adventure with a touch of hope, courage, and hobbit humor to keep me sane.
My daughter’s first fantasy story – because nothing brings more joy than reading her words and being reminded of the magic of storytelling passed down through generations.
With these four, I’d have faith, epic battles, timeless wisdom, and a whole lot of heart to keep me going!

Interview With Author LJ Smith

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Scottish writer living in Perthshire. I took early retirement in 2019 after a 34 year career in education to write seriously. My first novel, ‘Listen To Mother’, was published on 16.01.25 by Blossom Spring Publishing. I have completed a second novel, a family saga examining the power of the family to influence life choices, and am currently completing a third novel, a dystopian thriller.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The inspiration for this first novel, ‘Listen To Mother’, came initially from a trip to Florence in 2011. However, the main inspiration was a desire for others to experience the world from the viewpoint of someone with high functioning autism whose struggles with the reality of life result in his joining a world in the shadows.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really although I do like to splurge write. I will spend a few days considering the plot, how the characters are going to react to events and then sit down and write. Not sure it’s that unusual but it suits me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have a very broad taste in literature and it would be hard to say that one author or one book has influenced me. However, the books I enjoy most are those where the characters interest me and their actions drive the plot.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a dystopian thriller entitled ‘Alone’.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Good Reads or X

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Persevere even when you feel your book may never be published. There will be someone out there who will like it. Believe in what you are doing.

Never give advice!
