Colonel Robert Adams, MD, MBA, is the author of three non-fiction books.

A Legacy of Service
After serving 18 years in the Navy, the author resigned his position as a SEAL Commander (0-5) to begin again as an Army Second Lieutenant (O-1) at Wake Forest Medical School on an Army scholarship. An Army residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, was followed by 3 1/2 years as the DELTA Force Command Surgeon and wartime service with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq.

After the military, he built a thriving private practice in North Carolina, where his practice earned numerous awards for clinical excellence. Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
As an author, I have been writing for over 20 years. I have 12 books to my name (some under Kimberly A. McKenzie and some under Kimberly A. McKenzie-Klemm).

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Twisted Rabbit” is my newest fiction book, just released and available on lulu.com. I have listed it for mature content. Only those 18 years of age and over may order it. For this reason, “Twisted Rabbit” is found by looking up my name and clicking on the “hidden titles” for age verification.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always turn my creative “notes” into book notes. When I have a thought or an idea, I jot it down in sentences or half-sentences. Then, when I go back to write, if the thought or idea doesn’t pan out, I save it for a Setting, Character, Theme, or Plot note for my next book.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have authors I admire. Anne Rice, Margaret Atwood, Tom Clancy, and Mark Twain are just a few that I could mention.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am taking a small vacation “break” from writing my next book, as “Twisted Rabbit” was just completed.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I like social media, word of mouth, and (of course) author vehicles like Awesomegang.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is “never give up.” My first book, “The Rest Room,” took seven years from the beginning to publication. I wrote for three years. The one publisher that even responded to my manuscript said to “send it back in about a year ‘if you clean it up’.” So, I put “The Rest Room” away for a year. Then I went back to it, and it took another two to three years to rewrite. I sent “The Rest Room” to the same publisher three to four years after his note, and he loved my rewrite, and then he granted publication. Unfortunately, after his wife died, the man (Henry Wren at henrywrenpublications.com) closed up his business.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When I was a sophomore in high school, I won a short story writing competition and the judge (Mort Castle) told me to remember for the rest of my life this phrase: “You are a writer.”

What are you reading now?
I am reading “The Raketeer” by John Grisham.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am not sure if I’ll embark on another fiction journey immediately, or if I have another non-fiction work waiting. I write both types of books.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“The Bible,” “The Complete Works of Shakespeare,” and a book on how to build a treehouse.

Since I do not have to the fund to start my own rocket company or building cool Mars colonization gadgets, writing a book about it while I attempt to launch different businesses.

Inspired by this sense of adventure and my passion for epic fantasy, I created a world where heroes face impossible odds, kingdoms clash, and mystical forces shape destinies.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I write, it feels as if the characters are walking right in front of me—bursting into laughter, hiding their faces when they see me, or sometimes staring into my eyes and crying. When I experience this, I can write a lot in a very short time.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been deeply influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien and his legendary works, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. His ability to create immersive, richly detailed worlds and memorable characters inspired me to craft my own epic fantasy in The Battle of the Red Land.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on the next book in the Bindakia Series.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Since The Battle of the Red Land is my first book, I haven’t promoted a book before, so it’s hard to say which method or website works best. I look forward to learning what strategies are most effective as I continue sharing my work with readers.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
If the urge doesn’t come from within, if there isn’t love, or a certain inner compulsion to express yourself, then no one should write. Art is a reflection of one’s inner experiences, emotions, and feelings—a small but meaningful summary of what lies within.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Always be grateful for the land and water that nurtured you. Help others whenever you can, and if you can’t, at least make sure you don’t cause harm.”

What are you reading now?
I’m currently focused on writing my second book, so most of my reading time is devoted to research and inspiration for that project.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next, I’m continuing the Bindakia Series with my second book and plan to expand the world with more adventures, magic, and epic battles. I’m excited to share new stories with readers and take them deeper into the world of the Red Land.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I would take J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to immerse myself in epic fantasy worlds. I would also bring a book that inspires creativity and imagination, and perhaps a personal journal to capture thoughts and stories along the way.
