Interview With Author Lisa Montanaro

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Ciao, I’m Lisa—part no-nonsense Italian American New Yorker and part sunny Californian. I’ve worn many hats, including a performer, teacher of deaf students, employment lawyer, executive coach, productivity consultant, speaker, and author.

Like many writers, I grew up with my head in books. I loved reading, and it was one of the great joys of my childhood. I also loved writing and came to it at a very young age. My writing background is a mash up of fiction and nonfiction. I wrote stories and poetry as a young girl and filled countless journals (a therapeutic habit that has stayed with me into my adult years). Then I became a lawyer and learned the craft of legal writing. Since I left my law career in 2004, I’ve published hundreds of articles, blog posts, and newspaper columns through my consulting, coaching, and speaking business, and as a freelance writer. In 2016, I decided I wanted to write a novel and that started me down the path of writing what would become my debut novel.

I write book club fiction featuring complex characters breaking barriers and fighting to truly be themselves despite obstacles in their way—including the time they live in and societal stigmas. My debut novel, Everything We Thought Was True, was inspired by my family history and examines the corrosive nature of secrets—those we keep from ourselves, from each other, and from society. It released in January 2025 by Red Adept Publishing in print and eBook, and in May 2025 on audiobook produced by Tantor Media, narrated by Annalee Scott. I’m honored that it was awarded first place for LGBTQ Fiction in the 2024 International Firebird Book Awards, Honorable Mention in General Fiction in the 2025 Los Angeles Book Festival, and finalist for LGBTQ Fiction in the National Indie Excellence Awards.

I’m also the author of the nonfiction book, The Ultimate Life Organizer, published by Peter Pauper Press in 2011, and contributed the chapter “The Brand Called You” in the anthology Launch Pad: The Countdown to Marketing Your Book in 2024.

I serve as webinar host for the Women’s Fiction Writers Association (WFWA). When not writing, I enjoy cycling and hiking with my veterinarian husband, tending to my garden, and chasing after my rescue dog. I’ve enjoyed living snow-free since 2012 in Northern California, where I’ve made it my mission to sample the wines of the region.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I think many fiction authors wind up writing novels with strong themes that impact them over their lifetime. Everything We Thought Was True is a multi-generational Italian American family drama told in dual timeline that deconstructs a secret that forever shapes a family. Everything We Thought Was True is a deeply personal, but fictional, novel. It’s inspired by my family’s unique story. The novel unfolds over multiple decades through three family members’ voices and explores what we pass to future generations. The characters are all trying to live their lives while the world and the truth are encroaching. Many families have secrets that shape future generations. I hope readers resonate with what it’s like for a person and family to suffer emotional trauma or loss, and how it affects their lives.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I draw from my performance background and use a version of Method acting to create and embody the characters in my novel, and even perform my scenes out loud. I also dictate some of my scenes voice-to-text if they come to me when I’m not in a good position to type—like when I am cycling!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Diary of Anne Frank sparked my interest in writing as a young girl, which began my lifelong habit of journaling. As an adult reader and writer, the author Ann Patchett is my go-to. I love anything she writes—personal essays, memoirs, and novels.

What are you working on now?
I’m very excited about the concept for my next novel, which is historical fiction set in the early 1950s, and features a trio of trail-blazing women who break barriers in legal education. Think of a mash up of Hidden Figures, Lessons in Chemistry, and The Paper Chase. I’m in the early stages of research, character development, and scene identification. I’m looking forward to diving into the writing stage soon. I love getting the first draft of a manuscript down—it feels like falling in love!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love to take a multi-tiered approach to mix up my marketing and reach readers. I post regularly on my author website’s Events and News Page, and blog. I adore doing in person events at indie bookstores and libraries, and speaking at writer conferences. I love to visit with book clubs virtually and in person. I use pretty much every social media platform. I send out a monthly author newsletter—Prosecco & Prose. And I participate in promo newsletters like AwesomeGang! I love talking all things bookish anywhere and anyway, and being in conversation with writers and readers. They are my peeps!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Surround yourself with “believing eyes”—people who will support you on your writing journey.

Be persistent and have patience! And exhibit a growth mindset to believe in yourself, take feedback, handle rejection, collaborate with a team of publishing professionals to create a finished publishable work, and the vulnerability and courage to release that work into the world.

Also, do your due diligence! Follow other authors, get to know publishers, watch the industry, look for the changes. Know the pros and cons of each publishing path and consider that each book may have its own journey. Perhaps even take a book-by-book approach. I think many of us will change up publishing paths over the arc of our author career.

If you’re a nonfiction writer moving to fiction, think of the ways your nonfiction writing background have had a positive impact on your fiction writing. Many nonfiction writers have experience meeting deadlines and word count, working collaboratively with others on documents, and accepting criticism of work product, all of which are valuable for a fiction writing career. Also, it’s a misconception that nonfiction writers aren’t good with story. A great nonfiction writer can weave facts into a narrative that tells a compelling story. My advice is to take stock of what your nonfiction writing background brings to you as strengths and leverage those.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That you can have it all—just not at the same time!

What are you reading now?
I recently read The Things We Leave Unfinished by Rebecca Yarros. It left me with such a book hangover! This was my first book by Rebecca Yarros, but it won’t be my last. I loved this dual timeline novel, with one story set in present day, and the other during WWII. There was so much to weave together, and the author did it beautifully. There’s a story within a story—one of the characters is an author and unearths letters from the past. Meanwhile, the reader is experiencing what’s happening in those letters through the characters in the past. Very cool! There’s love, romance (with some surprisingly steamy sex scenes in both the past and present stories), heartbreak, history, and surprise. I cried some tears of sadness and happiness while reading this one.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve now caught the fiction bug and plan to write as many novels as I can! I’m also looking forward to presenting virtually and in person for writer conferences, teaching webinars and workshops for writer groups, being a guest on podcasts, visiting with book clubs, and doing more events at indie bookstores and libraries. I’ve been honored to be asked to blurb some fantastic upcoming books by other authors. I love being a literary citizen!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh this is such a tough question! These books come to mind at this moment: Howard’s End by EM Forster, Beartown by Fredrik Backman, Commonwealth by Ann Patchett, Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, and Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. (Yes, that’s 5 books but my imaginary raft can fit them!)

A few words from the Writer*
The title of the book you are holding in your hands (My Dream is my personal Sun) I believe is quite obvious. It draws a parallel between the power of the Dream with the power of the Sun’s ray, which creates and maintains Life. The subtitle however, (Tool for Success) may misguide the reader, making him deduce that this book is yet another manual for success. No! No “manual” can lead you to success, because if that was the case, the way towards success would be open by simply following the steps that are described in many books which have been published worldwide…! In every single human story, in every single human creation, the Dream plays a key part because the way towards everything starts from it…! However, its role is hard to understand and it’s exactly because of this why we haven’t yet built the perfect human society…! By bringing the title and the subtitle together (My Dream is a personal Sun: Tool for Success) it becomes apparent that the Tool is the Dream itself. The separate subtitle is a pun which allows me to highlight the fact that the Dream itself is the actual tool…! As long as we activate it…! I am not an established writer with many book under my belt, but instead a man who has for several years now read plenty of books. I am fascinated by the thought that by simply opening a book, one can enter a field where they can mentally meet other people who have in turn met other people. Doing this, one gains the ability to reach the very ends of the Earth and of the History of Thought of all humankind. This way, one can enrich their knowledge and cultivate their spirit. In this book I don’t offer rules for success, but instead I intent to uncover the simple but at the same time incomprehensible meaning of the Dream…! If I am successful in this endeavor, I will be forever grateful to all those who will read it.

Everything starts with the first step!
The first step is called and indeed is the Dream!
It’s the fundamental tool for success, so that we can reach such a state, where we will be able to enjoy life with love and respect towards ourselves and other people!

I want to analyze in depth the things that happen around us regarding the behavior of People when they communicate with other People

I work with women who want to understand themselves better, heal emotional wounds, and build healthy and mature relationships. I’ve written two books so far. My writing is based on real experiences from my therapeutic practice, and I aim to speak to the heart — with honesty, support, and clarity. Each book I write is my way of helping women reconnect with their inner strength and move forward with self-respect and love.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is The Psychology of Love and Betrayal: How to Understand Yourself, Heal the Pain, and Build Mature Relationships After 30.
I was inspired to write it by the many women I’ve worked with as a psychologist — women who were trying to make sense of love, pain, and betrayal in their lives. I saw how often our childhood wounds shape our adult relationships, and how hard it can be to find clarity and strength after emotional hurt. This book is my way of offering guidance, support, and hope to women who are looking for healing and deeper self-understanding.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I suppose one of my unusual habits is that I often write in complete silence late at night or very early in the morning, when the world is still asleep. That quiet helps me hear my own thoughts more clearly. I also like to light a candle before writing — it creates a peaceful, focused space and reminds me that writing is not just a task but a personal ritual of reflection and connection.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been deeply influenced by the works of Brené Brown, whose research on vulnerability and courage resonates with my own approach to emotional healing. I also admire Esther Perel for her insights into relationships and intimacy. Additionally, books like Attached by Amir Levine and The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown have helped shape my understanding of human connection and self-acceptance. These authors inspire me to write with honesty, compassion, and a focus on growth.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am working on expanding my work with women’s emotional health by creating workshops and online courses that complement my books. I’m also writing a new book focused on self-love and resilience after difficult relationships. My goal is to provide practical tools and emotional support that help women rebuild confidence and create fulfilling lives.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
One of my best methods for promoting my books is engaging with readers on social media platforms like Facebook and Pinterest, where I share meaningful content related to psychology and relationships. I also use Amazon’s Kindle Free Promotions to reach a wider audience, combined with submitting my books to free promotional sites like Awesomegang. Building authentic connections and offering valuable insights helps me attract readers who are genuinely interested in my work.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is to be patient and persistent. Writing a book is a journey, not just a destination. Focus on sharing your authentic voice and meaningful stories that can truly help your readers. Also, don’t be afraid to learn about marketing and promotion — building an audience takes time and effort, but connecting with readers is what makes it all worthwhile. Most importantly, believe in the value of your work and keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I have ever heard is to “listen to your inner voice and trust your journey.” Life and creativity have many twists and turns, but staying true to yourself and your purpose helps you overcome obstacles and find fulfillment. This advice reminds me to be patient with myself and to keep moving forward, even when things feel uncertain.

What are you reading now?
Currently, I am reading Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. It offers profound insights into vulnerability and courage, which resonate deeply with my work as a psychologist and author. This book inspires me to encourage my readers to embrace their authentic selves and face emotional challenges with strength and compassion.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next, I plan to continue expanding my work by creating more resources for women’s emotional healing, including workshops and online courses. I’m also writing a new book focused on self-love and resilience after difficult relationships. My goal is to help readers not only understand themselves better but also build fulfilling, joyful lives.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Sheri! People also call me Grandma Sheri:) I’ve been traveling the southwest with my dog in my camper working at many national parks, resorts and National Recreation areas. I’ve seen many beautiful places and met so many wonderful souls along the way.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first and only book so far is called Kevin’s Magic Mittens! It’s taken me 8 long years to finally get it published. It’s a book inspired by my grandson Kevin! Over the years my grandson has lost too many kittens to count. I kept thinking and wondering where are these mittens going? Where is the honey hole of mittens? Then I realized. The mittens actually come a live with magic. They go on all these adventures. Kevin try’s to explain this to his parents but they don’t believe him. Kevin and his grandmother (me) have quite the adventure in this book. It leaves everyone wanting more:)

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write the story in my head before it goes on paper.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Judy Bloom has inspired me ever since I was a child reading all her books.

What are you working on now?
Kevin’s Magic Mittens 2!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon is great! I just published my first book on July 12th ( my deceased husband’s birthday) who is also named Kevin. I’ve sold over 75 books in 2 weeks. I can also be emailed at slhansen@yahoo.com to book readings and parties.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up! Keep your dream alive! Reach for the stars and most importantly…..believe in yourself. Always be your own biggest fan!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There are no problems…only solutions….its true…

My own book:)

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to make a business out of it. I’m going to book parties for the young and old. I’m giving each participant 2 small wooden mitten ornaments of their own to decorate. I’ll bring all supplies. Then I’ll hold a mini karaoke dance party while I’m selling and signing my books. I want to bring the magic of storytelling telling back along with a art and craft and exercise while dancing.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First aid books and survival books.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a finance professional turned author, driven by a deep interest in the psychological layers of human behaviour. My debut novel, The Unsold Games: When You Are the Game, is a psychological thriller that delves into themes of childhood trauma, guilt, and buried truths. I’ve always been fascinated by the hidden motives that shape our actions, and writing allows me to explore those complexities through fiction.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest (and debut) book is called The Unsold Games: When You Are the Game. It’s a psychological thriller that was inspired by a simple but haunting thought: What happens when a child walks into a toy store full of promises… and never walks out the same again? I’ve always been drawn to the unexplored emotional aftermath of seemingly ordinary events — the kind that hides pain behind silence. This story grew from my curiosity about childhood experiences, buried emotions, and the thin line between grief and revenge.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not as such.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I often draw from my personal experiences and my deep interest in human behaviour — especially the unspoken emotions people carry. Sometimes, I’ll find myself observing people’s expressions or recalling past moments just to understand how a certain character might react. I also tend to write late at night, when the world is quiet but my thoughts are loud. That silence helps me dive into the psychological layers of my stories. Besides I liked the The Silent Patient and The Housemaid.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently planning two new books. One is a gripping narrative titled Interview with a Terrorist, exploring the complex psyche behind acts of violence and the human stories within. The other follows AZGHAR, a mysterious time traveller whose journey explores the challenges of identity, destiny, and the impact of choices across different eras. I don’t want to limit myself to thrillers.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still new and learning.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Since I’m new myself, the best advice I can offer is to trust yourself and believe in the story you’re writing. Every writer’s journey starts with that leap of faith — embracing your unique voice and trusting that your story deserves to be told.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write a Novel by my Manager.

What are you reading now?
I am Studying SQL and POWER BI now.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Planning to write something which can be converted into a Motion Picture or a Series.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d prefer to carry my laptop so I could write. Depending on how much time I have, I’d try to work on two or three novels while there — turning solitude into creativity.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Harper Denai, a romance author who loves weaving stories where emotion runs deep, chemistry sparks, and fate always has a twist. From slow-burn tension to spicy heat, I write across the romance spectrum — always with bold heroines, layered worlds, and heart at the center of it all.

When I’m not writing about love, magic, or the chaos in between, I’m usually spending time with my family, learning something new, or devouring books that make me feel everything. I am a middle school social studies teacher and I love to bring history to life for future generations.

The Five is the start of a series close to my heart — a blend of fantasy, prophecy, and fierce, unexpected bonds.

I currently have out a five book series called THE FIVE. I am editing a 7 book series, a motorcycle club romance series that will be available by the end August. I have a few stand alones that will be available by then too. I have been writing since I was a teenager and just got the confidence to share my work.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I grew up with harry potter. It was my first love of reading. I always wanted to write a fantasy series, but as I got older, I drifted towards romance books. I combined the two things I love to read and created my own world.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have trouble sleeping, at night when I am laying there I start to plot. I can hear the characters voices in my head, picture what they look like, and create all these little scenes. All while just trying to sleep. I found that jotting down what is haunting my sleep, helps to alleviate the chaos and allows me to sleep. It is like they wont quiet down unless I make notes. Strange I know. But it is also why I end all my dedications to the voices in my head.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Kristen Ashley, Lola Wright, CM Owens, and Alanea Alder. These are authors that I can read multiple times and always feel like I am seeing details I missed the last read. They create new worlds with their descriptive imagery.

What are you working on now?
I am currently editing my Motorcycle Club Romance series, “Grim’s Angels MC”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am new to this still. I am slowly learning about platforms outside of tiktok and facebook.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Publish the book. Life is too short to wait until it is perfect. Honestly, it may never be perfect, but you should still post it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The only time NO is a guarantee is when you never ask in the first place.

What are you reading now?
Changing of the Guards series by Aquila Thorne

What’s next for you as a writer?
I just want to focus on publishing what I have been working on for years.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Awe now, that is just not enough. Most the books I love are series with more than five books. But if I had to name some then I think, Lady Luck and The three series by Kristen Ashley (3 book series).
