Interview With Author Anthony Bailey

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I lost his sight in 2015 due to complications from mismanaged diabetes, three years after suffering a life-altering stroke at the age of 50. After a bout of deppresion I eventually found that writing gave me purpose, even though at that point I’d never written anything longer than a sarcastic quip in my best friends birthday card. I’m a devoted husband and proud father of seven, but as the kids grew older and began navigating their course through life’s unpredictable trials, I became increasingly aware of the different plights others less fortunate had to traverse. I have written around 15 books on a plethora of subjects, from romance to politics. I suppose I view writing as both a refuge and a weapon against injustice.

I have a background in U.S. politics and social behavior and endevour to apply a sharp, unflinching eye to the dark corners of society, particularly where the vulnerable are silenced. My lived experience fuels my passion for exposing corruption, challenging authority, and defending those forgotten by the system.

Haunted by a world that seems to be spiraling out of control, I write not just to inform, but to awaken. My work is a warning, a rallying cry, and a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Escape from Aligator Alcatraz” In short, it’s a brutal tale of three undocumented souls vanished into a swamp prison with no trial, no lawyer and no mercy.
President Trump called it “beautiful.” A political move to appease the MAGA racist cult, but hidden from the media was unspeakable cruelty and degradation.

My book reveals the secrets they tried to bury and highlights the human cost of one man’s pathetic attempt to hold onto power

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write using the T.V. as “white noise” in the background. Being severly vision impaired I rely on magnifying devices which can be a real pain (not great for the creative jucies) Also chewing gum puts me in the zone

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read a lot of books prior to my stroke in 2015. Since my stroke, reading hasn’t been the same, not because I’ve lost my love for books (that fire still burns bright), but because my brain now struggles to process what it once handled with ease.

I can still see the words. I can still hear them in my mind. But the meaning behind them, the context, the flow, the connections between ideas often slips away before I can fully hold it.

Imagine reading a sentence, and by the time you reach the end, you’ve forgotten how it began. Or finishing a page and not being able to say what it was about. That’s what it’s like now.

It’s not about intelligence. It’s about neurological disruption. It’s a change in how my brain interprets language and memory after the stroke.

But I still create. I still write. I still feel stories deeply. I just experience them differently now.

As far as authors that have influenced me? Anyone writing a good biography, honest, raw, and real.

What are you working on now?
The way the Christian Right have infultrated politics, especially in the U.S.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At this point I only have Amazon

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just do it, BUT don’t tell anyone until your book is done

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I remember my Dad telling me something I’ll never forget. As he gave me the keys to his new car he looked into deep into my eye’s and said “If you even put a scratch on that car, don’t bother coming home”

What are you reading now?
Mainly bills

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have no idea. How exciting!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d take 4 really thick books that I could stack one on top of the other to help me reach coconuts

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Quiet Ones Lie Best explores the idea that the most dangerous people aren’t the loudest — they’re the ones you barely notice. I’ve always been fascinated by how trauma hides in plain sight, and what happens when the past catches up.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write late at night, when it’s quiet and everything feels a little more unhinged. I like to pace around in the dark and let scenes play out in my head before I ever type a word.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Gillian Flynn, Tana French, and Alex Michaelides. I love books that make you question everything — even the narrator. I also draw a lot of inspiration from dark films like Gone Girl and Prisoners.

What are you working on now?
Book 2 in the series — and let’s just say it gets even darker. I want to explore the emotional aftermath of the first book while introducing a whole new web of secrets.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Right now, I’m submitting to free promotion sites, connecting with thriller readers, and letting word-of-mouth do its thing. I believe a good story finds its audience — you just need to give it some momentum.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start before you’re ready. You’ll never feel 100% ready to publish — just get it out there, stay consistent, and focus on telling a story that you would want to read.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Write the book you can’t stop thinking about.”

What are you reading now?
The Chain by Adrian McKinty — fast-paced, disturbing, and brilliant.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now, I’m focused on growing this series and delivering stories that feel just as intense and emotionally layered as the first. My goal is to keep building momentum, stay true to the themes that resonate with readers, and carve out a space in the thriller world that feels authentic and unforgettable. I’m here for the long game — and the twists are just getting started.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d take the kind of books that unravel slowly — the ones that haunt you long after the last page. I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid, for its eerie descent into the mind. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, because it’s brutal, beautiful, and unapologetically damaged. The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward — a masterclass in misdirection and emotion. And The Enchanter by Vladimir Nabokov, a lesser-known psychological puzzle that feels both poetic and deeply unsettling. I’d want company on that island, and these books know how to whisper in the dark.

Interview With Author Emily Strem

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have worked with children and adults in social-emotional learning, mentoring and life coaching capacities for over 25 years. I taught elementary school and social-emotional learning for many of those year, and I am now publishing my first children’s book! I love guiding children to navigate friendships, develop empathy, build confidence and trust their inner voice.
I have an educational background in human development from Cornell and Columbia, and consider myself a lifelong learner alongside my students, colleagues and clients.

My writing is often inspired by heartfelt conversations on the hiking trails of Arizona’s magical red rocks with my two teenage daughters, supportive husband, and playful Sheepadoodle Roxy.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first children’s book is titled: Ada Finds Her Heart Smile. After teaching elementary school and social-emotional learning for many years, I was inspired to create a story that activated children’ emotional intelligence and offered the perfect blend of text and illustrations for children transitioning from picture books to chapter books.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a retired Religious Studies teacher living in Wales, UK, with a doctorate in the field earned many years ago. Since retirement, I’ve devoted myself to writing fiction with a gothic horror sensibility, alongside several specialist books exploring unconventional spiritual topics—including a comparative study of Buddhist philosophy and tarot symbolism. I also co-author a series of gothic humor novels with my friend Dave Cartwright, featuring Eric Burncastle, a Wodehousian aristocrat whose misadventures blend the macabre with the absurd. I’vewritten about ten books in total

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novella is entitled Melmoth’s Chain, inspired by Charles Maturin’s classic Melmoth the Wanderer. Maturin’s original features a Faustian figure who roams the world attempting to lure desperate souls into making pacts with the devil in order to escape his own damnation. My version takes a more optimistic and contemporary approach, weaving in modern concerns like pandemic preparedness while reimagining Melmoth as a more morally complex and potentially redeemable character than Maturin’s irredeemable wanderer.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I draw much of my inspiration from watching public domain gothic horror films, and have written reimaginings of several cult classics, including Gabbo the Great, Carnival of Souls, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Dementia 13.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
A typical eclectic fayre – Lovecraft, Poe, Dan Simmons, Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Gaiman, Neal Stephenson, Umberto Eco, Wodehouse

What are you working on now?
A Scottish folklore, inspired by Lovecraft.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Kindle direct – been pretty good so far.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
proofread, edit, and repeat. Many times.

Make sure your friends and family read your stuff first – they can offer some very useful objectivity.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
So far, I’ve managed to crank out three books under “The F*cking Frustrations Chronicles: Where Everything Went Wrong”. Because let’s face it, life doesn’t always go according to plan, and sometimes the only thing you can do is laugh through the pain (and maybe scream a little).
Here’s the lineup:
I Can’t Find My Orders: Where the F*ck Is My Order! — for when your online shopping delivery seems to have taken a detour to another dimension.
I Can’t Find It: Where the F*ck Are My Keys?! — for those ‘did I leave them in the fridge?’ moments.
I Can’t Sleep: Go the F*ck to Sleep — for when your mind is a never-ending loop of “what ifs,” and your bed feels like it’s in a whole other time zone when you finally need to crash.
Each of these books is an unfiltered, laugh-out-loud take on the everyday frustrations that make us want to throw our hands up and yell, ‘WHERE THE F*CK IS EVERYTHING?!’ If you’ve ever had one of those ‘I can’t adult today’ moments, then you’ll totally vibe with this series.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest book in my series I’m working on is “I Can’t Believe I Just Said That: What the F*ck Was I Thinking?!” — and if you’ve ever had a conversation where you literally wanted to crawl under a rock after, then this one’s for you. It’s basically an all-you-can-eat buffet of awkward moments, verbal disasters, and those soul-crushing instant regrets that hit you way after the fact. You know, those times when your mouth goes full rogue, and your brain’s still stuck in ‘oops’ mode.

I was inspired by the constant cringe I’ve felt after saying something wildly inappropriate or just plain dumb, and I thought, ‘You know what? Let’s turn this into a whole book.’ So, if you’ve ever had that post-conversation freak-out at 3 a.m. — questioning every word you just said — then congratulations, you’re officially a member of the ‘What the F*ck Was I Thinking?!’ club.”

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, my writing habits are pretty much as chaotic as the title of my series suggests. I’ve been known to write while wearing mismatched socks, sipping on wine (because adulting is hard), and Googling ‘how to keep a straight face during a breakdown.’ I also talk to my characters like they’re real people—sometimes they’re the only ones who understand my frustration with a forgotten coffee order or the fact that I’ve lost my keys again. Oh, and I never write in silence. There’s always some playlist of angry, therapeutic music blasting in the background, because if I’m going to be frustrated, my characters better be too.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh, plenty! For starters, I’m a huge fan of books that don’t sugarcoat life’s chaos — authors who embrace the messiness, like David Sedaris and his hilarious and brutally honest observations about the human experience. Also, Jenny Lawson — her ability to turn awkwardness and mental health struggles into something that’ll make you laugh ’til you cry is “chef’s kiss”.
I guess you could say I’ve been influenced by anyone who makes you laugh through the chaos, while reminding you that it’s all part of the wild ride called life.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m plotting “I Can’t Believe I Slept With You: Where the F*ck Is My Dignity?!” — because, let’s face it, we’ve all had that one questionable decision that haunts us like an unpaid bill. This book will dive headfirst into the chaos of post-relationship regrets, questionable decisions, and the moments when you wake up, look around, and think, “What in the actual f*ck did I just do?” It’s gonna be brutally funny, awkwardly real, and probably make you cringe, but in the best possible way.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method for promoting my books is keeping it simple and relying on the old-fashioned approach: word of mouth and sharing with people who get it. I connect with readers through conversations, whether it’s chatting in book communities or just spreading the word about the frustrations we all face. The goal is to create buzz one laugh at a time — because when life’s a mess, we all need a little humor to get through it!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My best advice for new authors? Embrace the chaos. Writing is messy — sometimes the words flow, and sometimes they don’t, but that’s okay. Don’t be afraid to dive into the frustrations and imperfections of life; they’re often the funniest (and most relatable) parts. Also, don’t get hung up on perfection. Just get the words down, edit later, and never be afraid to laugh at yourself. Most importantly, keep writing — even when you think no one’s reading. Someone, somewhere will totally get it, and that’s what makes it all worth it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard? ‘Don’t take yourself too seriously.’ Life’s a mess, and so is writing. If you can’t laugh at the chaos — and yourself — what’s the point? Embrace the weird, the awkward, and the ‘What the f*ck did I just do?’ moments. They’re often the best stories. Plus, if you can laugh through the frustration, it makes it a whole lot easier to get through.

What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m reading whatever chaos I can get my hands on — mostly a mix of humor and self-help, because balance is key. I just picked up a book by David Sedaris, and I’m constantly laughing at how he can turn the everyday frustrations into something hilarious. I’m also diving into Mindy Kaling’s latest, because sometimes I need a good dose of sarcasm and wit to get through the madness of life. It’s all about finding that perfect blend of humor and reality, just like my own books!

What’s next for you as a writer?
What’s next? Well, I’m definitely not slowing down anytime soon. I’ve got more of “The F*cking Frustrations Chronicles” coming your way because, let’s face it, life never runs out of material. After “I Can’t Believe I Slept With You: Where the F*ck Is My Dignity?!”, I’ve got some wild ideas brewing — probably more awkward situations, more questionable decisions, and a whole lot more laughs. The goal is to keep turning life’s chaos into something people can laugh at, relate to, and think, “Wait, that’s me!”

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d probably bring a mix of survival and comfort reads — because I need to stay sane and entertained at the same time.
Bossypants by Tina Fey — I’d need something funny to distract me from the island’s lack of Wi-Fi, and Tina’s sarcasm is the perfect island companion.
The Dictionary — Because if I’m stranded, I might as well learn some new words, right? Plus, I could just keep flipping through it for fun.
And lastly, a survival guide — because, you know, being practical might come in handy when the coconut water runs out.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Fatimah Al Amro. I’m a Saudi novelist and columnist with a deep passion for storytelling. I’ve written several novels in both Arabic and English, including Aslan’s Sky and the Formula 1–inspired series Luis the Spaniard. I’m currently writing a weekly column focused on arts and culture, and I love exploring how emotions, identity, and imagination come together in fiction.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I’ve recently published two novels that are close to my heart—Aslan’s Sky and Luis the Spaniard – Turn.

Aslan’s Sky is a romantic comedy set between Saudi Arabia and Turkey. It was inspired by the emotional contradictions people carry—between chaos and calm, love and confusion. The heroine is a famous woman in her thirties who meets strange characters, visits a relationship expert, and even crosses paths with Andrew Garfield. But the real question is: Who is Aslan?

Luis the Spaniard – Turn is the first in a four-part series inspired by Formula 1. It follows Luis, a professional F1 driver who comes to Saudi Arabia after a year of silence. Publicly, he claims to be here for business. Privately, he’s preparing for a surprise comeback in the Jeddah Grand Prix. But fate has other plans—especially when a mysterious Saudi woman enters his life.

Both books explore identity, emotional complexity, and the moment life shifts unexpectedly.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I do! I often write late at night when everything is quiet and the world feels a little softer. I prefer dim lighting and soft instrumental music to set the mood. Sometimes I write scenes completely out of order—starting with an emotional climax and then working backward to understand how the characters got there. I also enjoy writing in cafés, where the background noise strangely helps me focus. I always keep a notebook in my bag, because some of my best lines come while I’m doing the most ordinary things—like waiting in line or walking through the airport.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Rather than being influenced by specific authors, I’ve always been shaped by the emotional worlds that stories create. Since childhood, I’ve had an active imagination. I used to look at the Italian paintings my father brought home and imagine myself as the heroine inside them—building entire stories in my head. That habit never left me. I enjoy reading fiction that opens emotional doors, and I find inspiration in anything that stirs the imagination—whether it’s a novel, a memory, or even a silent image on a wall.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a deeply romantic novel—something more emotional and intimate than my previous works. I actually started writing it a few months ago but decided to pause, as I’m focusing on publishing the second and third parts of my Luis the Spaniard series. Both books are currently being translated, and I want to give them my full attention before returning to the new story.

At the same time, I’m also waiting for the right moment to bring one of my novels into the world of cinema—a dream I’ve been working toward with patience and intention.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I believe the best promotion comes from building genuine connections with readers. I use platforms like Instagram and Twitter to share glimpses of my writing process, character insights, and personal reflections. I also value niche websites that support indie authors, such as Awesomegang and BookGoodies. But more than anything, word of mouth and heartfelt reviews have had the greatest impact. When a reader connects emotionally with a story and shares it—that’s the most powerful form of promotion.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice to new authors is simple: write with honesty, and don’t wait for the perfect moment. There will always be doubts, distractions, and reasons to delay—but the story you believe in deserves to be told. Protect your voice, but also stay open to learning and evolving. Publishing is a journey, not a race. Be patient with yourself, and remember that even if one reader connects with your work, you’ve already succeeded in a powerful way.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard was: “Write only about the moments worth living. As for the ones that hurt you—survive them, then let them go.”
It reminded me that not every pain needs to become a story, and that strength sometimes means choosing silence. As a writer, it taught me to be selective, intentional, and emotionally honest with what I share.

What are you reading now?
I like to alternate between contemporary fiction and classic literature. Right now, I’m reading a mix of romantic and introspective novels—some for inspiration, others just to enjoy the language and emotional depth. I also revisit certain books that once moved me deeply; it helps me reconnect with why I started writing in the first place.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m focused on expanding my reach to international audiences by continuing to publish in both Arabic and English. I’d also love to see one of my novels adapted into film or television—something I’ve been slowly working toward. Beyond that, I want to keep writing stories that explore identity, emotion, and the quiet moments that change everything. I don’t chase speed—I chase depth.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d bring a book that makes me feel deeply, one that challenges my thinking, one that makes me laugh, and one that feels like home. I’m drawn to stories that are rich in language and layered with quiet emotion—books that I can revisit and still discover something new each time. For me, the perfect book isn’t just one I read—it’s one that stays with me.
