Interview With Author Autumn Potts
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi friends!
Dabbling in short stories and creating worlds through words has always been a passion of mine. I live in Dallas with my fiancee, stepdaughter, and our five beautiful cats. I’m a founder and creator with CtrlAltCrit – an inclusive community of gamers and nerds. I’m a crafter at heart; I dabble in everything from painting to bookbinding to cardmaking and more. I even built my daughter a swingset one summer. I’m a student of life, a lesson I learned from my favorite book: The Walking Drum by Louis L’Amour.
Curiosity is my debut novel!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Curiosity actually began as a Nanowrimo story. I hadn’t ventured into science fiction much at the time and I really wanted to make something in that genre. Turns out, I absolutely love writing science fiction. The inspiration behind this story really isn’t a single thing I can pin down. Perhaps it came from watching technology as I grew up go from giant computers and dial up internet to the monolith it is today in terms of reliability and accessibility. Plus, I like to consume sci-fi in any medium.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say I do anything unusual when I write, but I do my best work when I’m in the mood to work on specific things and I only focus on those. So if I’m feeling upset about something it’s easier to pour that emotion into a particularly devastating chapter. I can’t always write things in order because of that. I do enjoy writing in coffee shops for the ambiance, and when I listen to music while writing it has to be music with no lyrics to distract me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh that’s a hard question. There are so many. I know for sure that The Vatta Wars series by Elizabeth Moon has been a big influence in how I world-build and think about technology in sci-fi settings. Neil Gaiman has always been a big influence because of the scope of his imagination. Tolkien and L’Amour are also major players for me.
What are you working on now?
Currently I’m working on the sequel to Curiosity: Identity.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Most of my promotions are through Instagram, Tiktok, and Facebook.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Try literally everything. Most established authors will give you the advice that worked the best for them, and even if you think it won’t work for you, try it. You never know what’s going to be the one thing that kick-starts whatever it is you need to get to exactly where you want to be as an author.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If at first you don’t succeed, figure out why. Don’t just keep trying blindly. I feel like that isn’t heard enough in the querying and writing community.
What are you reading now?
Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey – the whole series is going to be so great to dive into
What’s next for you as a writer?
Curiosity is the first in a series, so I’m working on the rest of those for the foreseeable future. Curiosity will be out on December 15th, and I’m hoping to have the sequel (Identity) complete soon!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh easy! The Walking Drum by Louis L’Amour, The Lord of the Rings (the whole thing counts as one these days), an empty notebook (with pencil of course), and probably a guide to surviving on a desert island. I’m nothing if not practical.
