Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I’m Ava. ๐ I have written a variety of short erotic science fiction stories that I am currently in the process of publishing. I am passionate about experimenting with different genre combinations and using humor and horror in equal measures.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Human Trials is my first published story! I thought it would be funny if a girl found a weird flyer and subsequently found herself in a growingly awkward situation. Anyway, my ideas come to me from the ether, and they come faster than I can even write them!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I used to be a plotter, but recently I have mostly pantsed my way through stories, even though my old habit keeps popping up. I guess with short stories it’s easier, and I’m a little chuffed to say that I HAD TO start writing stories instead of novels because the novels never got finished! My brain is such a jumble of messy thoughts and I can never know where something goes, and if it’s not perfect, out it goes. Haha.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am a Potterhead, so I grew up with Harry. I also loved Divergent and The Hunger Games, like most everybody. I hated 50 Shades, though, so you won’t find any of that in my writing… mostly because I’m a sucker for anything speculative and alternative worlds and situations. If your stories are not original, then why write them?
What are you working on now?
I am working on an intergalactic pet store where humans are basically untameable pets, also on a chaste girl who ends up working in a sex club, a science fantasy story, and a bunch of other stories that are almost finished and ready to go!!! I try to publish every week, so you’ll see plenty of me before the year ends.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well, most erotica authors will tell you to just churn books every other day and let that be your promotion, but I actually used twitter for my first promotion and it shot me up to #5 in the top free best sellers list and #33 in the top 100 paid! People on twitter are so supportive and helpful, especially the #writingcommunity because there are tons of indie authors there, who know how hard it is. Also, I can’t wait to try some other ways like submitting to promotion sites and group bundles and newsletter swaps!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Try everything, keep persisting, and make sure everything is top quality – your book, your book cover, your book description, your title, your keywords, your categories, and your marketing strategy will all bring more sales, so don’t overlook anything.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That you can email Kindle Direct Publishing, asking them to add your book in additional categories. The other best advice was – find a niche that sells and is not too competitive and carve a little place for yourself there.
What are you reading now?
Right now I am reading His Human Slave by Renee Rose because that is the most popular book in erotic science fiction and it’s amazing! It’s well written, it’s funny, and I see now why people went nuts for it.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next would be to see whether the niche I have chosen will pay off… truthfully I could have chosen paranormal erotica as well, but I felt it was so crowded. In any case, I’ll keep publishing and experimenting and see what works and doesn’t work. In the end, this is a great learning opportunity! I’m not in it for the money, but for the long game, and whatever “niche” I end up embracing, I’ll just keep churning out those weird, wonderful stories that perch inside my brain.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Well I would probably just take one book from my favorite authors… the problem is, they are so many! My taste tends to run dark, so Dean Koontz, Chuck Palahniuk, and Stephen King have always been inspirations. As for any specific books, I just love too many to choose.
