Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Longmont, Colorado and raised in Camanche, Iowa. I graduated from Camanche High School in 1985. Upon graduating, I joined the United States Marine Corps and became a helicopter mechanic eventually assigned to HMX-1, the Presidential Support Squadron. Earning an Honorable Discharge, I was released from active duty in 1992.
I was involved in the sport of bodybuilding at a very early age receiving my first weight set in third grade! I began to compete as a teenager finally winning my division at the Mr. Teenage Iowa in 1985. I went on to compete for the Marine Corps winning my division at the Armed Forces Championships in 1991. I continued to compete after being release from active duty earning the title of two-time nationally qualified, but I was forced into early retirement after back to back knee surgeries.
I began my aviation career outside of the military as a mechanic for a major airline based in Washington D.C. I soon realized that that wasn’t the career I wanted so in 1999, I obtained my private pilot license and began the long road to becoming a commercial airline pilot. I have piloted some of the world’s most notable celebrities from Paris Hilton and Dave Chappelle to Condoleeza Rice and Danny Devito. I currently live in Wisconsin and work for a major airline based out of Chicago, Illinois. I am working on my fourth novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest book is titled Psychiatryst. It was inspired by nothing more than the question…what if?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Unusual? No. I am a mad snacker, but finding out that this is fairly common. I prefer to write in the middle of the night.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Though I no longer read, when I did, I was a Joe Finder fan. I no longer read because of a great piece of advice from a wonderful book titled “Making a Literary Life.” Carolyn See, the author, said if you’re going to write, don’t read. You’ll only take other author’s ideas and styles and put them into your writing. It won’t be your own. Of course, I’m paraphrasing, but you get the point.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Caretaker, Memoirs of A Not So Good Killer…it’s a bit of a dark comedy that follows the life of a young boy who, while trekking through the woods, stumbles upon a serial killer who is in the middle of burying his latest victim. The boy is in awe of the man he now calls the Caretaker and wants to be just like him. The only problem? He’s just not that good.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Persistence persistence persistence…word of mouth is an incredible source of advertisement for a book. Websites are great, but you have to get the public to those places in order for them to buy. The web is a great tool to help you, but it can also be a great deterrent. Ever tried to convince an online shopaholic that your book is better than what she’s looking at on QVC?
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t ever let someone convince you that you need a big publisher or an agent to get your book out there. Write a good book and they will come.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t use a fifty cent word when a five cent one will do.
What are you reading now?
nothing
What’s next for you as a writer?
Going to try my hand at screen writing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Robinson Caruso, anything by Tolkien, Count of Monte Cristo.
