Interview With Author B Talia
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m someone who’s always felt a little bit outside the lines, too much, too sensitive, too scattered to fit into one box. I have ADHD, and for a long time I thought that meant I had to work harder to fit. I used to think I needed a niche or a clean message to be a writer. But the truth is, I’ve never fit neatly into a box. I’m learning that maybe I don’t have to. My writing reflects that, I don’t come with polished answers. I write from the messy middle, where things are still unfolding and healing isn’t always a linear process.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Unmasking Me: The Mask of Independence is a journal for anyone who’s ever felt like they had to hold it all together. It was inspired by my own journey of unmasking the independence I wore like armor, being the strong one, the dependable one, the one who never asked for help. That independence helped me survive. But eventually, it became a cage. I didn’t know how to let people in or how to fall apart.
This book is about that in-between space, where you’re not fully healed but you’re no longer willing to keep pretending. It’s about the moment you realize that the mask you thought made you strong is also what’s keeping you lonely. If you’ve ever felt exhausted from carrying too much, from being “fine” all the time, this book is a space to begin putting that mask down, piece by piece, without shame.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I work in bursts of thoughts, usually whenever something emotional hits or during random waves of energy. I write late at night or in the middle of the day, depending on when the mood strikes. When I’m in it, I write in long hyper-focused stretches where I completely zone out of everything around me except the thoughts I’m trying to get down. It’s chaotic, but it works for me and for the way my brain works.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Brené Brown has been one of the biggest influences. Her work on vulnerability helped me feel like it was okay to write honestly, even if it’s uncomfortable or unfinished.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m giving myself space to just write without knowing what it’s leading to. I’m not sure what the next project will be, and I’m learning to be okay with that.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Currently, I’m using my blog Becoming the Break, along with short-form videos on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. I’m still figuring out what works best for promoting my writing, it’s definitely a learning process. I try to focus on connecting more than marketing and let the words speak for themselves.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
It’s okay if you don’t have a niche or a step-by-step plan. Some of the most powerful writing comes from those raw, unexpected moments, not from a perfectly outlined strategy. And if you’re a writer with ADHD or someone who struggles with the organizing part, use tools or support that help. I use things like Notion and Canva to make sense of the chaos in my brain. Brain dumps can be messy, but they matter, and there are ways to shape them into something beautiful.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is that it’s okay not to know how you’re going to get there, as long as you know where you’re going.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Echo Fort because I enjoy the escape. Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti know how to pull at your emotions and bring you into the characters in a way that makes you feel everything right alongside them.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I don’t know yet. I’m figuring it out as I go. But I do know I’ll keep writing from wherever I am.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Honestly, I have so many favorites that it’s hard to choose just a few. The way my brain works, I don’t really have a favorite anything. I don’t even a favorite color. But if I had to pick a series to bring with me, it would probably be the Zodiac series. It’s such a great escape, and one of the rare series I could actually reread over and over without getting tired of it.
