Interview With Author Bay Woodwin
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Where to begin… sometimes I feel old and sometimes I feel young. I’ve had the opportunity to travel, see many interesting places, eat some unusual things, and make some really cool friendships. But most days, I’m happy to just be at home.
In terms of books, I’ve only got the one out now, but I have 3 more completed, along with a novella and several short stories. All are set in the same universe.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“The Great Game,” which is the first book in my Tempestverse series.
I’d say no one thing inspired me to write it, but a multitude of different life experiences spanning a couple of continents have inspired the settings and some characters.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Mostly, I write to get the stories out of my head so I can sleep at night. You could say I know the characters very, very well! I like to game different scenarios and interactions over and over again until I end up in a place that I think can work. Usually, that seems to happen the most just before I am about to drift off.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are many authors, but in terms of the genre I am working within, I’d say Isaac Asimov, and more recently John Scalzi.
I could list a bunch of SciFi books, but in an attempt to show I have some depth, I’ll pass on that. Instead, I’ll note the I also love history. Especially when history tells us a great story (or is told to us by a great storyteller, such as in “How the Irish Saved Civilization”). I’m also interested in reading about histories and stories that are less familiar to me, like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (the books to be clear, not the video games).
What are you working on now?
I’m working on finalizing a novella as a follow-up to “The Great Game.” It is tentatively called “Shadows of the Great Game: Caux and Kasadee.” It will provide a backstory for Tokï Caux and Kasadee Von, who we meet in the first novel. It is set for release in late Spring of 2024.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still trying to figure that out. I am having some small success with a few folks on Fiver at the moment.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
One of the questions below helped me answer this one!
I don’t think it matters if you are self-published or a big-time writer: when you’re in this gig, you’re more than just a writer. You need to wear a couple of hats, not the least of which is a big fancy marketing fedora. Be ready to learn about more than just your craft.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t do this for the money. Find another reason and you’ll be happy. I don’t think it’s cynical or negative. It’ll just help you stay motivated in the early stages as you develop yourself and your following.
What are you reading now?
The Dark Forest by Liu Cixin. Just about done, then on to book 3!
What’s next for you as a writer?
More novels, novellas, and short stories set in the Tempestverse. As I said, I’ve got a good bit of materiel – and it’s fairly far along too in some cases.
