Interview With Author Bearix Koch
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Hungarian-born, Switzerland-based author and architect. Storytelling has been part of my life since childhood, but after years working in architecture, living in Switzerland inspired me to return fully to writing. My work explores themes of memory, identity, resilience, and artistic discovery, often through stories that bridge cultures, time periods, and creative disciplines.
To date, I have written three books: Final Stop: Switzerland, a personal and practical exploration of adapting to life in a new country; Picasso’s Hidden Legacy, a novel blending art history, speculative fiction, and emotional depth; and Whispers of Wonders, a short story collection originally written in Hungarian and translated into English, accompanied by paper-collage illustrations. I continue to work across fiction and nonfiction, drawn to stories that connect the personal with the universal.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Picasso’s Hidden Legacy. The inspiration began with a creative writing class assignment, where I was asked to submit a short story. As I worked on it, the idea continued to grow beyond the limits of the assignment. The characters, themes, and questions around art, memory, and time stayed with me, and the short piece gradually evolved into a full-length novel.
What started as a small creative exercise became a long-term exploration of how art carries meaning across generations, and how personal stories can intersect with history in unexpected ways.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do some of my best writing while traveling by train. There is something about the quiet movement, the ever-changing landscape, and the fleeting diversity of people around me that sharpens my focus. The rhythm of the journey creates a space where ideas flow more freely, and scenes often take shape as the world passes by outside the window.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Thomas Mann, Alessandro Baricco, John Marrs, Naomi Wood, Margarat Atwood, Toni Morrison, Ian McEwans
What are you working on now?
I am working on a family saga, beginning in the 1750s, when a German family is settled in the Hungarian soil. It is my imaginary family history and a vivid historical drama.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am currently working on a family saga that begins in the 1750s, when a German family is settled on Hungarian soil. Drawing on history and imagination, the novel traces generations shaped by displacement, resilience, and belonging. It is an imagined family history told as a vivid historical drama, exploring how personal lives are woven into larger cultural and political transformations.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start with a few pages and trust where they lead. A story often grows in ways you can’t fully explain—from a small idea into something larger, even a whole book. There is a kind of quiet magic in that process. When it happens, it feels like a privilege to witness and shape it, and that alone makes the effort worthwhile.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Live each day as if it were your last—not with urgency or fear, but with presence. Enjoy the journey as it unfolds, noticing the small moments that give life its meaning.
What are you reading now?
Ian McEwan: What We Know
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to take the time to appreciate what I’ve achieved so far, while also turning my full attention to my next project—a family saga I’m eager to begin. It feels like a natural next step, allowing me to build on what I’ve learned while exploring a deeper, long-form story.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Selma Lagerlöff: Jerusalem; Thomas Mann: Buddenbrooks; Alessandro Baricco: Seta; Huxley: Brave New World
