Interview With Author Becky Troup
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have published one book so far with a handful on the way. I don’t have a niche or preferred genre. Once I’m done with my current set of ideas, I’ll have written two Self-Help books, a cozy fantasy series, a superhero fantasy, and started a long-running sci-fi series.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Self-Compassion for Self-Defense: A Guide for Neurodivergents to End the Cycle of Bullying Trauma. I spent my whole life (I’m in my mid 40s) trying to “fix” myself so that I could finally let go of trauma from childhood bullying and find my voice. But nothing worked for me. I felt alone in my journey when therapists told me I was too self-aware, too analytical, and perhaps I should try yoga. It was after my diagnosis of ADHD when everything started to take shape. As I learned about neurodivergency, I realized it was the reason why traditional therapy and advice didn’t help: I needed help with my nervous system and the mountains of shame and self-judgement that I had taken on. This book walks readers through the steps I took to ease the intensity of my trauma triggers. In fact, I practice what I preach every chance I get!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Using AI seems to be a real stopping point for many. But it has been a life saver for me. My “unusual” writing habit is to brain dump into ChatGPT prompts. When I’m ready to work on one of my books, I just start typing whatever comes to my mind into the prompt. The reason I waited so long to start writing books is because the task was too overwhelming. I never get stuck anymore.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Anne of Green Gables series will forever be the most influential book for me. LM Montgomery still inspires me today.
What are you working on now?
Everything all at once: my two series, second self-help book, and a stand alone fantasy.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still figuring that out.
What are you reading now?
100 interviews of slaves in America. Their stories are heartbreaking and fascinating. It’s like reading about a whole other world, but it was a world that my ancestors created and inflicted upon them. It’s important to know the history you’ll never find in history books at school.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A survivalist book, a desert island cookbook, a how to build a boat book, and a how to make a communication device out of dirt book.
