Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I combine my nerd-love of Victorian history with my passion for storytelling in my young adult fiction, i.e. novels set between 1837 and 1901. I write about the humble hero, the spunky heroine, and a fun historical plot with quirky twists. Above all, I hope my writing entertains you and provides an escape. My short stories and poetry delve into contemporary magical realism and absurdity.
It was in my masters program where I realized the power of the nerd. My nerd made me interesting and fun. My nerd gave me a passion and a voice to speak about it. My nerd gets excited with other nerds about their nerdy passions like dance technique, historical facts, the craft of fiction, food adventures, and more. My nerd wants to meet your nerd so we can nerd out together.
I have written two young adult novels, Catching the Rose and Haunting Miss Trentwood, and two short stories, The Story of Mad Maxine and Haunting Miss Trentwood: The Seance.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Haunting Miss Trentwood was inspired by my research of the English countryside, and reading gothics like Rbecca by Daphne du Marier, and The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I wrote Haunting Miss Trentwood I used the website 750Words.com, which pushed me to write something, anything, every day.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Gaskell, Jasper Fforde.
What are you working on now?
An 1865 Civil War novel set just south of Columbus, OH. It begins the day after Lincoln is shot. You can keep up with my progress and research by following my blog.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Honestly, reader reviews help a lot. I could probably do more promotion, I’m in awe of M. Louisa Locke, who has 200+ reviews on her self-published works. She’s doing something right!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep plugging away, even when it’s difficult. I’m going through a rough patch myself, and I keep telling myself it will get better.
What are you reading now?
Sweeter than Birdsong by Rosslyn Elliot.
What’s next for you as a writer?
What is your favorite book of all time?
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, of course.
