Interview With Author Benjamin Babic
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Originally from Croatia and currently based in Germany, I hold the position of Logistics Director at a major eyewear company in Europe. My academic background includes a Master’s in Economics and an MBA. I started my career as a management trainee in a wholesale company and quickly progressed to become a store manager by the age of 26. Transitioning from a sales-focused role, I entered the e-commerce sector, eventually assuming the role of a senior manager overseeing the order fulfillment department.
Beyond my expertise in operations and logistics, I consider my most crucial role to be that of a people manager and leader. Working alongside my teams brings me immense satisfaction, and I take pride in assisting their professional development. Accumulating insights over the years, I am eager to share my knowledge with aspiring managers.
I’ve only written one book so far, but who knows what’s in store for the future.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is called “Leader, Not a Boss”. The inspiration for the book came from my two former team members who were beginning their managerial journeys when I was their manager. Drawing from my experiences as a former young manager, I decided to write a book filled with the advice I wish I had received when I first entered a managerial role.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
So far, I haven’t picked up any quirky writing habits. But, I did most of my first book while on vacation in Malaysia and Cambodia, casually fitting in writing between sightseeing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of my favorite authors is definitely Simon Sinek. He has written many bestsellers in the field of leadership, such as ‘Leaders Eat Last’ and ‘Start with Why.’ I also enjoy reading books by Mark Manson, with my favorite being ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k’.
What are you working on now?
Currently I’m busy with promoting my book.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My book was released in November, and I’ve recently begun its promotion, so I don’t have any winning strategies in place just yet. I’ll be happy to share in future what worked for me.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up and be patient. Creating a book is a lengthy, challenging, and sometimes exhausting process. There will be moments when you feel like giving up, but it’s crucial to persist. Additionally, you cannot rush the process; allow yourself time to think through what you want to write. Taking some time off, if possible, is also beneficial. Give yourself a few days of rest and return to your writing with a fresh perspective.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice comes from my dear friend and my former coach – “When you have to make a decision, and you don’t know what to do, just listen your heart”.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading a Radical Candor by Kim Scott. It’s a fantastic book that offers a more human approach to leadership compared to the conventional practices I personally adopted many tools in my daily business.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’d love to say something fancy like working on a sequel to my book, but right now, I’m just figuring out how things work in this “writing” world.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
– The Success Principles by Jack Canfield
– The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k by Mark Manson
– Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell
