Interview With Author Beth Long
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am Beth Long, PhD, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, with over 20 years of experience working with families and individuals. I have been blessed to be an Army wife, which made it possible for me to work in six unique clinical environments across the country. As a mother and clinician, my goal is to blend my research-based expertise with compassion. I love helping families move from conflict to connection because I know how challenging parenting can be.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Beyond Words is my first book and it was inspired by the fact that so many parents say to me, “I told my child that!”. Children do not learn because we tell them things, they learn through experiential repetition. The book explains how parents can do this in their daily lives to support their children well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My favorite place to write is in my hammock. When I am frustrated with the process, I either take a nap or go for a walk, but I try not to go back inside my house to face all of the distractions.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Lysa Terkeurst is so vulnerable and transparent. I feel like I know her after I read one of her books. I also love Mel Robbins for the same reason. I love any historical fiction book!
What are you working on now?
I have almost finished another parenting book about helping children learn the art of emotional regulation. I am beginning to write a book for Christian parents because I believe the church needs to begin viewing “bad behaviors” as skill deficits so that parents are encouraged to teach instead of punish. I believe this aligns with the gospel much more than most Christian parenting books.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, we have been focusing on social media. I am getting noticed for my clinic’s funny videos than I am for my serious teaching videos. We are exploring all of the options.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
As Dore said, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” Just replace swimming with writing and editing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It is none of my business what other people think about me.
What are you reading now?
Eight Dates by John and Julie Gottman
What’s next for you as a writer?
This year I have quite a few members of my family who are in the middle of a medical crisis and I am praying for opportunities to support them well.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, The Women by Kristen Hannah, and a very large blank journal
