Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I served almost eight years in the infantry during President Reagan’s time in Office. I decided to write an autobiography on my time in service and how hard it was serving during the Cold War. The book was so well received I turned it into a series on the history of the Cold War through the careers of the veterans who served during this critical time in history. Book two is on the history of the Cold War in Germany and features seventeen soldiers from 1960 to 1989. Book three was just released.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
We Were Soldiers Too: The Unknown Battle to Defend the Demilitarized Zone Against North Korea During the Cold War (Volume 3) This is a continuation on my documentary series on the history of the Cold War.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I interview each veteran and just sit down and write their chapter from the notes, researching as needed while I am writing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I haven’t really been influenced by any because my reading preference is fiction and my books are nonfiction history.
What are you working on now?
I am writing a Christian children’s book now and will follow this up with “Memories of Mammaw” a book about the inspiration and impact my grandmother had on us growing up and then having to personally experience her struggle and death from dementia.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook. It is important to me to participate in conversations with your friends as I work through each project.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid and keep putting it off. If you’ve always wanted to write a book then sit down and start it. It’s very easy and inexpensive to self publish. Just be sure and have it professionally edited which is the one expense you can’t avoid.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I wrote my first book without telling anyone until I was ready to publish it so I didn’t have any advice. I taught myself everything from book cover design to building my own website and marketing.
What are you reading now?
I am not reading anything right now
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have written a business plan and will have one more book in the Cold War series out by the end of the year, the children’s book, and three other nonfiction titles. I will have a couple of books win Book of the Year next year.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
