Interview With Author Bohdan Kivulia
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my debut book. I’ve been working on this story since 2014, although there were periods of creative pause along the way. Last year, I returned to the project with renewed energy and focus, and I’m proud to finally share it with the world. It’s been a journey of growth and persistence, and I’m excited to continue developing this universe in future works.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is Hollow Cross. The inspiration for it came from a blend of deep philosophical questions, personal experiences, and an interest in exploring the complexities of human nature. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of mysticism, morality, and the unknown, and I wanted to create a story that delves into these themes while weaving together elements of psychological and supernatural suspense. The book reflects my ongoing exploration of these ideas, and I hope it resonates with readers who enjoy thought-provoking narratives.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I do have a few unusual writing habits! For one, I tend to write best when I’m in a quiet, almost meditative space—often with dim lighting and soft background music that fits the mood of the story. I also find that I work in bursts, with periods of intense focus followed by moments of stepping away to reflect and let the ideas settle. It’s almost like I need those pauses to let the creativity percolate before diving back in. Another habit I have is scribbling down ideas in a notebook at random times, whether I’m out for a walk or just taking a break, and then weaving them into the story later. It keeps the creative process fluid and unpredictable.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King has definitely been a major influence on my writing. His ability to blend psychological depth with supernatural elements has always fascinated me, and I admire how he creates characters that feel incredibly real, even when they’re facing the most outlandish situations. His mastery of suspense, pacing, and creating a palpable atmosphere is something I strive to emulate in my own work.
Aside from King, I’m also influenced by authors like H.P. Lovecraft, whose exploration of the unknown and the cosmic horror genre left a deep impact on me. The way he constructs eerie, otherworldly settings inspires the more mystical aspects of my stories. I’ve also drawn inspiration from authors like Neil Gaiman, whose blending of myth, fantasy, and reality resonates with my own love for combining the metaphysical with human emotions.
Each of these authors has contributed to shaping my narrative style and approach to creating tension and intrigue.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m focused on the continuation of the series, particularly the next installment of The Hollow. After the events of the first book, the stakes are higher, and the story delves even deeper into the psychological and metaphysical elements that have been building throughout the series. The protagonist’s journey will take some unexpected twists, as the truth behind the sages’ actions and the full scope of the Astral collapse begins to unfold.
I’m also exploring how the protagonist’s internal struggles, his fragmented memories, and the moral dilemmas he faces will intersect with the increasing chaos in the world around him. It’s an exciting stage of the story, and I’m diving into new character arcs while continuing to expand the world’s depth and complexity.
I’m really looking forward to sharing more, as the narrative becomes even darker and more intense with every turn.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, I’ve tried several methods to promote my books, including using social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, as well as Goodreads for reviews and visibility. However, I’ve found that creating a connection with readers through engaging content—like sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes looks at the writing process, and discussions around themes from the book—really helps build interest.
I also think email newsletters have been a solid tool. Collecting emails from interested readers and sending them updates on new releases, exclusive excerpts, or other content related to my books can help maintain engagement. There’s also value in book promotion websites like BookSprout, where you can offer ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) to gather reviews.
I’ve learned that consistent engagement, patience, and trying a variety of promotion avenues is key. Connecting with communities that share an interest in psychological thrillers or fantasy can also help. It’s still an ongoing journey, but I’ve seen small successes with these methods.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write for yourself first – It’s easy to get caught up in what others want or think, but at the end of the day, you need to write the story that excites and inspires you. Your passion will come through in your writing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t fear criticism – Not everyone will love your book, and that’s okay. Take criticism as a way to grow, but don’t let negative feedback define you or your work. Every author faces rejection and criticism—it’s just part of the process.
What are you reading now?
At the moment, I’m not reading anything specific. Sometimes I take a break from reading to focus on my own writing, but I’m always on the lookout for something intriguing when the time comes!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m currently focused on continuing the The Hollow series and developing the next installments. There’s a lot of exciting content to explore in this world, and I’m eager to dive deeper into the characters’ journeys and the mysteries surrounding them. I’m also working on fine-tuning my writing style and experimenting with new ways to bring the atmosphere and themes to life.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That’s a tough one! But I think I’d go with a mix of classic literature and something to keep my mind occupied: “The Stand” by Stephen King, “1984” by George Orwell, “Moby-Dick” by Herman Melville, “The Complete Works of Shakespeare”.
