Interview With Author Bradford Perry
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have books 1-4 of the SWAG series completed and am waiting for illustrations. I’ve also written many short stories and have a series of micromissions with the SWAG characters partaking in hilarious training exercises and missions.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The SWAG series was inspired by the video game HALO…It was huge when I was in college. I imagined the military recruiting kids and having them control remote weaponry like in the game. Who better to do it than kid gamers? I wrote half a manuscript 20 years ago and let it die on an old laptop. Then I decided to revive it because I couldn’t get the idea out of my head. The original was SWAK…Like the SWAT Team (Special Weapons and Tactics), but the Tactics switched out with Kids. Then I realized SWAG was much catchier and the Kids turned to Gamers. The games were also updated and now the characters are masters of Minecraft, Splatoon, and Fortnite. It’s so much fun to write and the possibilities are endless-keeping my brain going 100 miles/hour.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I sometimes wake up at ridiculous hours in the morning and start writing on the weekends. I’m not sure why, I think I just get so excited and then 3 am rolls around-I’m up and tapping a keyboard!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King…because I read his memoir. Marcus Emerson–he’s hilarious, talented, and able to produce a TON of material. Lawrence Pringle: I did an author study in college on the guy and was able to communicate with him so that was awesome!
What are you working on now?
I’m living and breathing in the SWAG (Special Weapons and Gamers) world. I’m doing some shorts while I wait for illustrations on Book 1- Eggpocalypse. The shorts are about retro gamers with old-school style who get picked up by the SWAG team for specific one-time missions.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I wish I knew, but TikTok seems to be the best. Hopefully AwesomeGang overtakes the prize!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up and write another book! If one person reads your book and likes it, there might be one million more people out there…try to find them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your inner voice is one of your most powerful tools. Cultivate it and learn how to use it.
What are you reading now?
It sounds boring, but I like to read a lot of self-help books to keep me motivated as a writer. Currently, I’m reading, ‘The Let Them Theory,’ by Mel Robbins.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully, book tours and school visits…until then, I’ll keep writing, teaching, and raising kids at home. I’m busy!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1) Hatchet: Because….well, you know survival tips, motivation, and all.
2) The Hunger Games: Just in case anyone else showed up–I’d want to be ready.
3) Percy Jackson: Is there anything more entertaining?
