Interview With Author Bradley VanDeventer
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have published three novels and numerous short stories in literary journals.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is titled Crushed Trachea Blues. I wrote it from 2020 to 2021. It was inspired by my love of two things: Raymond Chandler and jiu-jitsu. I had gone down a Chandler rabbit hole while simultaneously taking up jiu-jitsu. I thought the premise of suicide by jiu-jitsu would be naturally intriguing and would require a discerning yet noble character such as Paisley Fuentes to solve the case. The title comes from a variation of the guillotine choke, one which leaves the practitioner of the technique with a sore windpipe from all the applied pressure–hence Crushed Trachea Blues.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. I write long-form on paper. I’ve been known to write at busy intersections, provided I’m at a dead red light. You know: safety. Something about the impersonal bustle gets me in a flow state.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Influential authors include Salman Rushdie, Thomas Pynchon, Raymond Chandler, John Barth, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, and Milorad Pavic.
What are you working on now?
An epic novel about a militant female pope, a cryptocurrency mined through love, and insects from outer space. It is titled Scourge of Honey.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon ads.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read a lot. Contrary to some other writers’ opinions, DON’T read stuff you don’t like. Read stuff that inspires you. Pay close attention to the craft and find your own style.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write with your blood, Friedrich Nietzsche.
What are you reading now?
Prometheism, by Jason Reza Jorjani
What’s next for you as a writer?
To publish an already-written sequel to Crushed Trachea Blues and finish up Scourge of Honey.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
60 Stories, Donald Barthelme
Tarot Fundamentals, Paul Foster Case
Midnight’s Children, Salman Rushdie
Inherent Vice, Thomas Pynchon
