Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in northern Utah, and this is my first novel. Year ago I published a book of poetry, but Who She Was is the first full length publication.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Who She Was: A Sylvia Wilcox Mystery was inspired by random news reports and events I observed while living in Detroit, Michigan. Basically, a bunch of small, unrelated events started to swim around in my head, and I figured they would make a good story.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a binge writer. Nothing comes for weeks at a time, but when the creative juices start to flow, there is no stopping them! I will sit in front of the computer and write for several hours at a time. There are times when I don’t leave my house for days at a time because I am writing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Stephen King and Jonathan Kellerman. Stephen King is the master of description, and Kellerman has a way of pulling in readers and keeping them, even if his books contain unrealistic elements. I like stories I can get lost in, and both of these writers provide the escape I desire.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Displacement and The Remnant, the next two novels in the Sylvia Wilcox Mysteries series. I plan on releasing one of them in November, and the other in February of 2020. I’m not quite sure which one will be released first, but it will most likely be Displacement.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use my website to promote my writing on my website, brayleeparkinson.com. Readers who subscribe to my newsletter receive a chapter of a serial novel each month.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice to new authors is to find people in the literary world who have achieved what you are seeking. For example, if you are just starting to write and consider publishing, look for writers who have already published books. If you are looking for a long term writing career, look for writers who have been successful and engaged in the writing business for at least five years. Learn from those who are where you want to be.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your mindset will determine the level of success you will have as a writer.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading Once Gone by Blake Pierce.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My next move as a writer is complete my next two books, and move into a full-time writing life. My goal is to be able to do that by spring of 2020.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb, Ordinary People by Judith Guest, and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
