Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing fantasy since the fourth grade. I live in Ogden, have an amazing husband and four little kids. I write fantasy novels between doling out cheerios and folding laundry.
“Woven” is my first published novel, but the sequel “Bound” is coming out soon, along with several anthology contributions.
In real-life, I work as a birth doula and midwife’s assistant, attending women in pregnancy and labor, which is huge inspiration for my writing.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Woven” was inspired by a poem titled “The Lady of Shallot” by Tennyson and Arthurian Legend (Camelot, knights of the round table, etc.), and by a song sung by Loreena Mckennit (The Lady of Shallot).
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I listen to new age, enya- like music when I write, though, and usually have chocolate. Sometimes a baby in my lap. ๐
What authors, or books have influenced you?
SO MANY. Harry Potter was huge for me, Mists of Avalon, Brandon Sanderson, to name a few.
What are you working on now?
“Bound” is the sequel to “Woven”, based on the story of Tristan and Isolde (another Camelot legend). A time travel anthology, a moon-phase anthology, a Peter Pan sequel, and a trilogy!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I prefer in-person book signings, but when I’m not there I’m on Facebook, mainly. And email. People still read email, so it’s a good place to be.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
You have time. Relax a bit, and make that book REALLY good before submitting or self publishing. Hire a professional editor for sure. But first, WRITE THE BOOK!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The next book is your best marketing investment.
What are you reading now?
“Bride of the Sea” by Emma Hamm- fantastic dark fantasy!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Lots more books!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Book of Mormon, “Lirael” by Garth Nix… can I bring my kindle? Lol. Those two, mainly. Maybe a single volume edition of all seven chronicles of Narnia, or just book 2 (The Lion the witch and the wardrobe) if that’s not allowed, lol.
