Interview With Author Bryan Fagan
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi. I was born and raised in Burlington, Washington. About 70 miles north of Seattle. I’ve been living in Eugene, Oregon since 1994. I’ve got two amazing daughters and an equally amazing wife. I credit my daughters for capturing the writing bug. They wrote stories at a young age and wanted me to join in. Because of them I will be completing my third novel soon.
I’s been a fun ride and I hope it continues. Writing is hard but I love the challenge.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Chasing the Moon.
I am drawn to characters at a low end of life. Rock bottom. Sometimes we need a little bit of luck to find our way to the top. In this case, time travel and a persistent six year old child.
I enjoy challenging these characters to see what they are made of. How far will they go to give themselves a better life. Will they stay the same or is there something in them that they never knew existed that will force a piece of them they never knew existed to the top.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. Pen and paper at the kitchen table. My backyard facing to my right. No clue why I have to do this. All of my writing is by freehand. I outline on typing paper and write the scenes in a notebook. When that is complete I head on over to my computer, play my favorite tunes and type away.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Armistead Maupin. I wish Rex Picket would write more books. I have just discovered Eva Rice and of course Stephen King. It’s funny, I am not a fan of horror, but I have read all of his books. To me, he is a character driven novelist. Once a year I read IT. For me, that book is the ultimate study guide on how a character should be written.
What are you working on now?
It’s called Saving Iris.
About a man struggling with the death of his girlfriend. She visits him in his dreams. The story opens with her giving him clues on how she died and who killed her.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still trying to figure that out. Write a great book, stand on top of my house and scream to anyone passing by that I wrote something. Sadly, the police frown on that. Seriously – Find as many resources as possible. Interviews, social media, sites like Awesome Gang. Every week find a way to tell the world you wrote something.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Patience. You’re playing the long game. Work hard, listen and learn.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Put the reader first.
What are you reading now?
Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro
What’s next for you as a writer?
Get up tomorrow at 5 am and do it again. It’s what I love.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
IT, Tales of the City, Sideways, Where’d You Go, Bernadette.
