Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my first book and I’m really proud to have completed it with my friend and co-author Danny Zacharias, a Ph.D. candidate at Acadia University, in Wolfville Nova Scotia, Canada.
After completing my Master’s in Environmental Studies from York University, it seemed I was destined for a career in international development but my passion for teaching and serving students led me back to the classroom.
I am originally from London, Ontario, Canada but I worked and travelled around the world. I served college and university students for over 13 years with the bulk of my career devoted to academic advising.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of our book is called: Crush IT at College: A No Nonsense Guide to Succeeding at University or College.
Having advised over 8,000 university students in my academic advising career I often thought about the root causes of academic difficulties. It’s wasn’t long before I realized it wasn’t poor study habits or poor time management that explained why so many students found themselves on academic warning or even suspended. So, I decided to write about it and share with thousands of students and their parents what it takes to be a successful and thriving student.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I would characterize my writing style as the opposite of verbose. I get to the point because I know that is what my students appreciate. Aside from loving peace and quiet and inviting sunshine into my office, there aren’t any habits that I would characterize as unusual.
What are you working on now?
I have a few other projects on my mind that I’d love to put on paper but I don’t want to give any secrets away quite yet.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That’s easy – Awesomegang.com!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I would enlist a partner who is tech savvy. Publishing your own book isn’t rocket science but it sure helps to have a partner in crime that loves the tech-end. The other piece of advice I would give is to spend money on the cover. A solid looking cover is critical to the success of a good book. Finally, edit, edit, edit. We were blessed enough to have 21 reviews before we formally launched our book. That review process helped us catch many of our errors.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Love your neighbour as yourself. Mark 12:30
What is your favorite book of all time?
Kisses from Katie. It’s a NY Times best seller.
