Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Callan J. Mulligan, I’ve been writing as long as I can remember, as my mother puts it, “you were born with a pen in your hand”. I have followed several careers in Marketing, Music and Film & Television, but writing and publication has always been my ultimate goal. I have now officially published my first work of fiction, a novella titled, A Mind of His Own.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Mind of His Own, written in the style of Hemingway with a major story influence from Stephen King’s work, is my first published work of fiction. It’s about a man struggling in the face of a traumatic past, coping with addiction, all the while experiencing a waking nightmare…
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. I try to force myself to write everyday, but it comes when it comes. (Classic writer excuse for procrastination).
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway, Ben Bova, too many to list.
What are you working on now?
My next book, a Science Fiction set on a starship. A murder happens and the ship starts experiencing problems… That’s all I can say.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I try to promote across the board, but amazon is the go to place for purchases and I do enjoy Goodreads.com for reviews and listings!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. And take harsh criticism wisely, it will improve your craft if you let it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do you write? Yes? Then you’re not an aspiring writer, you’re just unpublished.
What are you reading now?
Actually reading a non-fiction book by Neil DeGrasse Tyson (Getting into the cosmology mindset for my next book).
What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing, Publishing, and spending time with my wife. The end game is to support myself from writing, and no longer need a day job to pay the bills!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Stephen King’s “On Writing”, Ben Bova’s “Saturn”, James Frey’s “A Million Little Pieces”, Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea”. So many that I would honestly have a panic attack trying to choose.
