Interview With Author Cammie Stanek
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m the creator and author behind Squeaky Squirrel Schoolhouse, a fun and educational world designed to make learning exciting for kids. Through this series, I combine storytelling, creativity, and hands-on activities to help children explore reading, writing, and imagination in joyful ways.
So far, I’ve created several books, including storybooks, coloring books, activity books, and early learning workbooks — all featuring Squeaky the Squirrel and friends. Each book is made to spark curiosity, encourage creativity, and make learning feel like play. Writing for children through Squeaky Squirrel Schoolhouse has been such a wonderful adventure — it’s all about inspiring little learners to dream big and have fun while they grow!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Spot the Difference Halloween. I was inspired to create Spot the Difference Halloween because I wanted to capture the playful excitement of Halloween in a way that encourages kids to slow down, observe, and think creatively. Halloween is full of fun details — costumes, pumpkins, spooky decorations — and I thought it would be the perfect theme for a brain-boosting activity book.
I love the idea of combining festive fun with learning, so each page is designed to spark curiosity and strengthen attention to detail while keeping that magical Halloween spirit alive. It’s a great way for kids (and even adults!) to enjoy the season, unplug for a bit, and have fun together finding all the little differences hiding in plain sight!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do! I love to surround myself with the same kind of atmosphere I imagine in my books. When I’m working on something like Spot the Difference Halloween, I’ll light a cozy pumpkin-scented candle, play soft spooky music, and even have a few little Halloween decorations on my desk. It helps me feel like I’m right inside the pages I’m creating!
Sometimes I even sketch or color while brainstorming ideas — it’s my way of getting into a playful, creative mindset before the writing begins. I think staying connected to that childlike sense of fun and imagination helps me write stories and activities that kids truly enjoy.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve always been inspired by authors who know how to spark imagination and make learning fun for children. Writers like Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle showed me how powerful simple words and bright visuals can be when they come together to tell a story. I also admire Beatrix Potter for creating charming characters that stay in your heart long after you close the book.
Those authors reminded me that stories can teach, comfort, and entertain all at once — and that’s the kind of magic I try to bring into every Squeaky Squirrel Schoolhouse book I create. Whether it’s a story, a coloring book, or a fun activity, I want each page to feel like an adventure filled with creativity and heart.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on a Spot the Difference Christmas book, and I’m having so much fun with it! It’s filled with festive holiday scenes — from Santa’s workshop and cozy fireplaces to playful snowmen and Christmas tree surprises. Each page is designed to challenge kids’ observation skills while wrapping them in the magic and joy of the season.
I love creating books that bring families together, and this one is perfect for sharing during the holidays — a mix of fun, focus, and festive cheer all in one!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
TikTok
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My best advice is to stay true to your creative voice and keep going, even when things move slowly. Every book starts with a small spark — an idea, a doodle, a single sentence — and it grows as you nurture it. Don’t compare your journey to others; just focus on creating something that makes you smile and feels meaningful to you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you are the smartest person in the room you are in the wrong room.
What are you reading now?
What’s next for you as a writer?
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
