Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an Australian born writer who grew up on a farm in South Africa, where urban legend and traditional oral histories combined to provide a heady brew of stories. I settled in Australia as an adult but not before I had turned up unarmed at a gunfight, discovered dead bodies and fought off sharks while spearfishing. When not writing, I work as an IT project manager.
I’ve written two book and had flash fiction published in an anthology.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Plato Crater, it’s the second book in the Cities of the Moon series, following on from my first novel The Hills of Mare Imbrium.
The world’s great cities will go dark without the Moon’s helium 3 supplies. Jonah Barnes doesn’t care, all he wants is to stay out of trouble and find a job in the helium mines, but the people of the Moon have other plans.
I like the idea of exploring where humanity will go in the near future. Plato Crater explores how we are pushing towards integration with technology and asks whether this make sus more or less human.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Does rushing to get the best seat on the train carriage count? It’s where I do my best writing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many different authors. I particularly like authors who use the alien point of view to explore what being human means. Some of my favourites include: Embassytown
by China Miéville, The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi, The Sparrowby Mary Doria Russell, and Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper
What are you working on now?
The third book in the series of course. I also have another two books with plot lines slowly emerging from the chaotic morass of my idea pool.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I like Titter as a community for promotion
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. This is a marathon not a sprint. The more you write, the better you become at your craft.
