Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written four books and have just published my first one. All of my books are rhyming picture books for children aged from toddlers to about eight years old.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Scared of the Dark. I was very scared of the dark when I was younger and I still don’t feel comfortable trying to sleep in a silent, dark room now. I wanted to write a book that would help explain why we have a fear of the dark and that I think would have helped me when I was younger.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have to be comfy so usually write on my bed and quite often fall asleep mid way through writing! I don’t have a fixed time when I write so I can be writing at two in the afternoon or two in the morning.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I relate to the struggles JK Rowling had when she was writing the first Harry Potter. She’s an inspiration to keep going even when you don’t know where it’s going to take you.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on publishing The Blustery Day.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m just learning about marketing and promoting as I go along.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do what is right for you. Listen to advice but at the end of the day you have to do what works for you. Don’t just try and write what’s in style at the moment, if everyone did that there would never be anything new. The internet changed the music industry, careers have been formed from blogging and videoing and the internet has changed the publishing industry as well. You don’t have to put all your hopes into traditional publishing now. Traditional publishing may give a sense of validation but you can also get that from yourself and your readers.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To thine own self be true.
What are you reading now?
Shoeless Joe which was the inspiration for Field of Dreams.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on the books I’ve written to get them ready for publishing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’m a Stranger Here Myself and The Cat Who Came in From the Cold by Deric Longden
