Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Cathleen Townsend is an avid reader and writer, particularly of fairy tales and other forms of fantasy.
With her husband, Tom, she lives in California’s beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills, which is fortunate because it encourages her to leave her keyboard and take her dogs for walks. In her mind, the hills are also home to brownies, trolls, and dwarves, although they persist in lurking unseen.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Golden Key was inspired by a Brothers Grimm tale by the same name. However, their version was really more of a prompt. They basically took you up to the inciting incident and told you to finish the story yourself. So I did. 🙂
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m pretty flexible–I’ll write anywhere. So I’ve been seen with a notebook on construction job sites, the beach, the car–whenever I’ve got some dead time that I can fill with storytelling.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings had a profound impact on me.
What are you working on now?
My own fairy tale, called Windrider, about a teen girl who can travel to Faerie and discovers a griffin egg there.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Goodreads.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Find a good author forum or two. Get some good advice from people who’ve already experienced some success.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you start, finish.
What are you reading now?
The Drawing of the Dark by Tim Powers.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working to refine my habits so I’ll have greater productivity. And of course, I hope to grow as a writer.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
LOTR, the largest collection of fairy tales I could find, a dictionary, and a Bible.
