Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
A former English teacher and lover of all things romance and medieval, I love to blend the two and am excited to debut my first historical/medieval romance novels this month. To date I’ve released a free prequel novella and plan to publish the first Border Series full-length novel on March 2, 2017.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I am currently writing the third book in the Border Series. Like the others, it is set in 13th century Northumbria along the Anglo-Scottish border. Inspired by one event, the medieval tournament, this third installment will feature a winning Scottish tourney knight and the English lady who despises him. At first. After all, it is a romance.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I use the website calm.com while I write and listen to the closest background “noise” possible to match my scene. Whether it is the ocean or a roaring fire, I like to attempt to put myself in the location as much as possible while writing about medieval England from my very non-medieval Pennsylvania home.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Johanna Lindsey, Judith McNaught, Jude Devereux and Kathleen Woodwiss. I’m an 80’s romance girl at heart (with the exception of Monica McCarty).
What are you working on now?
I’m currently plotting the third full-length Border Series book.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My “Border Ambassadors” or street team. They have been an amazing boost to my author career launch.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read, listen, and read some more. I thought as a former English teacher with a PhD in language/literacy that I knew how to write a novel. Wrong. Read Cathy Yardley, listen to podcasts like the Story Grid and never stop learning craft.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never force a story. Follow the muse, always.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading outside of my genre, The Wheel of Time. In addition to historical romance I also adore fantasy.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Launching my career! It’s been a twenty-year dream so it is very exciting to actually (finally) be living a goal I set many years ago.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would choose 3-4 books from the A Song of Ice and Fire series. I could read them 100 times and find something new each time.
