Interview With Author Charity Pleasant
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written four books, three non-fiction and one fictional. I’ve loved reading for about as long as I could remember. I started writing in 2019 and happened to finish my first book during the height of the pandemic. I thought that I would work in Cosmetology for the bulk of my life but it turns out I like a variety of different things, writing to be among the top. I’ve resided in Ohio my whole life but love to travel in and out of the country whenever I can. I hope that my writing inspires people and that one day I can make a living continuing to bring stories both personal and creative to life.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Neighborhood is my latest book and it was inspired by my combined experiences of living in different places. People and their personalities are something I play close attention to because of my curiosity for life and learning. I hadn’t done a fictional story before this one and didn’t know that I could. I had so much fun using my creativity and playing up scenes in my mind for this story and I’m very proud of it. Anyone can relate simply because we all live somewhere in a neighborhood.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
For my nonfiction writing I simply just start typing my thoughts onto my computer screen. There’s no subject matter at first, I just type whatever is in my mind then start separating those thoughts into different chapters. Once I’ve separated them I give chapters a name then keep adding my thoughts until I have enough words to request a first edit.
Fiction is different: I think of the story line first, then write down character names and give them traits & personalities. Once I’ve done all that then I can begin writing a story.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Robert Kiyosoki has influenced me in a major way. I love the forthcoming in all of his books. Michelle Obama had a story that I resonated with the way she told her story, like we were sitting on the porch across from one another. Then there’s: David Bach, Joel, Kimberla Lawson Roby, and many more. It’s not that I try and write like any of these amazing authors, but they all seem to instill a little nugget of some truth or habit I take note of.
What are you working on now?
The three writing projects I’m working on write now are: a gratitude journal that should be available first quarter of 2026, book two in my fictional series, and a movie script I’m shopping around based off my first book. I’m always looking for gratitude in life even on a day that doesn’t quite seem to go how I planned. I thought this may help others as well to journal those moments of gratitude easily forgotten through the chaos of the day. Book two of my fictional series is developing a little slow only because there’s only twenty-four hours in a day. But I’m proud at the twenty or so pages already complete. I’m super excited about the movie script I’ve completed and it would be beyond my wildest dreams to see it on screen.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method of promoting my books are in-person events. I do a lot of vendor events in and around Columbus, Ohio where I reside. Although marketing is not my strong suit, I do what I can to promote through social media and selling digital books through my website
pleasantinvestments.com. My paperbacks are available on Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com, and a few other places. I’ll be happy when I can include paperbacks through my website as well but still working on the logistics of that.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My best advice for new authors are to have multiple edits by different editing styles. It’s priceless to have your best face forward from the beginning. Also, have patience. It may take time to get to the place where you want to be but don’t give up if you truly believe you have a good product. Work hard to know your market and to market to the ones who look for your type of product.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There isn’t just one big piece of advice that out weighs all the other. I like to say sift through the advice to see what works best for you. Sometimes I believe the best advice is not to take others advice but stick to your gut beliefs.
What are you reading now?
I’m always reading the Bible, it rekindles things I know already but isn’t in the forefront of my mind. I’m also reading How To Invest $50- 5,000 by Nancy Dunnan and Headache Free by Suzy Cohen.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To find an agent. I’m self-published so I need to partner with someone who is just as passionate about my books as I am so that together we can push further to people who not only look for but enjoy reading as well as taking something away from it as much as I do.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My first book, All The Things That Nobody Told Me: Finding the Extraordinary in My Journey which will forever be my favorite. The Battles of Electro boy vs Fire Boy to always have a piece of my son. The Bible for it’s same yesterday, today, and forever usefulness.
