Interview With Author Chezzi Howald
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Canadian dark romance and psychological thriller author with a soft spot for broken monsters and unapologetic chaos. I live in a small northern town where the nights are long and the inspiration is endless.
I’ve written Shadows and First Blood, the first in my Silver Series, and am deep into the sequels that drag readers further into the fog — Shadows of Redemption, Shadows of the Order, and beyond. Every book in this world bleeds with emotion, hunger, and survival.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Shadows and First Blood.
It was born out of insomnia, heartbreak, and the twisted question — what happens when the hunted decides to stop running?
Silver, my main character, came to me fully formed: a vampire with scars older than her enemies and a tongue sharp enough to slice through guilt. The story follows her as she collides with hunters, monsters, and love that feels more like a war than a comfort.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write at night — always. Coffee and chaos are my muses. I build playlists that match each scene (Kami Kehoe, She Wants Revenge, In This Moment, Sleep Token, Written by Wolves), light a candle that smells like sin, and write until my mind feels like static.
Also, I talk to my characters out loud. They argue back. We’re all fine with it.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Clarissa Wild’s Sick Boys cracked open my love for dangerous romance.
Anne Rice taught me that vampires can be both brutal and poetic.
And V.E. Schwab, Karin Slaughter, and Stephen King taught me that the best stories are the ones that don’t flinch.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m writing Shadows of Redemption, the second book in the Silver Series — the Ireland arc where Silver faces her past, her monsters, and a love that might destroy her for good.
I’m also outlining Shadows of the Order, a prequel about the ancient brotherhood that started it all, and planning Shadows: The Legacy, the next-generation continuation.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Facebook, Instagram, and Threads for visuals and dark quotes, but I’ve had great reach with GoodNovel, Amazon Kindle, and dark-romance reader groups.
I believe in organic marketing — connecting with readers through character confessions, playlists, and moody visuals that make them feel something before they even open the first page.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stop waiting for perfect. Perfect kills stories.
Write messy. Bleed on the page. You can fix a disaster — you can’t fix silence.
Also: don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s book ten.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Write the story that won’t shut up.”
If it keeps you up at night, if it crawls under your skin — that’s the one.
What are you reading now?
I’m rereading Sick Boys by Clarissa Wild because I love chaos with teeth, and Control, Alt, Delete by Ivy Graves for balance — snark, sass, and murder.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Expanding the Silver universe — spin-offs, companion novellas, and a “Legacy” storyline following Silver’s son as he uncovers supernatural crimes across continents.
There’s always another shadow to chase.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Sick Boys by Clarissa Wild
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Pet Sematary by Stephen King
