Interview With Author Clayton Graham
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello readers. My name is Clayton Graham, an Australian author of science fiction novels and short story collections. I have been fortunate enough to receive many book awards including Authors Show ‘50 great writers you should be reading’, Readers’ Favorite International Award finalist, and Book Excellence Awards finalist.
A background in aerospace engineering encourages my thoughts to surge skyward and well beyond our universe. I delight in creating strange new worlds and the intriguing peoples that inhabit them, and love to take readers on a journey to meet other universal travelers.
To date I have released eight books, all with a sci-fi and mystery focus.
I love animals, including well-behaved pets, and all the natural world, and am a supporter of Australian Geographic. I would likely love well-behaved alien animals, too!
If you like, you can check my novels out, download a free story, and read many blogs on my web site concerning universal mystery. You can also connect on Facebook, X, or Bluesky.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest work, Those Alien Skies, released in 2025, is a collection of three standalone, emotional, and mind-blowing science fiction novella that continue the exploration of the Milijun Universe. The novella are linked by the places and characters that occupy their pages, providing a captivating novel length reader engagement that spans across dimensions and universal space.
The inspiration for this book stemmed from the wonderful characters {and awe inspiring happenings} in the Milijun trilogy, and a wish to explore their lives further. What would you do when your son becomes the leader of a human-alien collaboration enterprise that uses mind-blowing technology?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not sure they are unusual, but most of my writing occurs in the afternoon. I draft out, print, edit by hand [usually in a relaxed position], amend, and then go through it all again. All this before the work goes to a pro editor.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of the first books I read, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stephenson, still inspires me to write adventurous books. Except mine usually involve aliens!
I love the ‘old school’ science fiction authors such as HG Wells and Isaac Asimov. There are many others I read during my late teens and early twenties, all of which are treasured memories.
What are you working on now?
I have currently started a new story, set in the near future, that features a mild-mannered language teacher trying his best to engage a group of uninterested students—except for one rather remarkable teenager. However, things get bizarre when he is suddenly recruited by the military following a series of UAP sightings. Who knows where this will go?
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a monthly newsletter and a website that are my primary sources of promotion. I also use Book Funnel and Story Origin for author swaps. Hopefully Awesome Gang will also help.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I have two pieces of advice.
Please keep everything you write, even if it does not contribute to your current work. Even small snippets can be useful in the future. In the age of computers this is an easy thing to do. You can catalogue them under your own headings.
Keeping a pen and paper by your bedside is a necessity for me. I often get ‘universally inspired’ thoughts when waking, and scribble them down. Don’t use your laptop or your phone—who wants to get bombarded by a screen when only half-awake.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up.
What are you reading now?
‘The Valley’ by Di Morrissey. Set in the Australian countryside.
Some secrets are never shared, never told.
A nice break from my alien emboldened thoughts.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully some pleasurable moments continuing the story of my mild-mannered language teacher and steering him towards a successful ending.
Oh, and book marketing, of course. Grrr!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Treasure Island and my Milijun Trilogy—in the hope of being rescued by an alien craft!
