About Coffee, Tea and Khat
Informed by personal experience, this work tells the story of three sisters living within a society with strict cultural norms and religious values. The impact of this lifestyle puts them at the mercy of decisions that are made beyond their control.
Faizah, thirteen years old, awaits an arranged marriage. Throughout her life, she witnesses the death of her best friend, the harassment suffered by her middle sister, Aisha, for being a victim of the “evil eye” and the departure of her youngest sister, Nurit. After years of an abusive marriage, she comes to realise the only way she can change her daughters’ fate is through education.
Set in the arid countryside near the historical city of Harar, this enthralling tale, spread over two decades, burrows into the complexities of this patriarchal society which is overshadowed by the ever-present devastating poverty, all this with the backdrop of the aroma of coffee, the taste of tea and the high of khat.
