Interview With Author D Taylor
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, I’m D. writer with a deep love for character-driven romance that explores emotional healing, cultural complexity, and second chances. I’ve written two books: Rescued, my first novel, which introduced readers to a heartfelt multicultural love story, and my latest release, Allied Hearts, which dives even deeper into themes of trust, vulnerability, and unexpected connection. My stories often center around emotionally rich dynamics, grounded settings, and characters who feel like real people—flawed, layered, and worth rooting for.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Allied Hearts. It was inspired by the quiet resilience people carry after heartbreak, and the unexpected ways love can show up—even when we think we’re not ready for it. I wanted to explore what happens when two people, both shaped by past wounds, find a kind of peace and understanding in one another. It’s a story about healing, trust, and the kind of love that builds slowly, honestly, and deeply. I’m drawn to romances where the emotional intimacy is just as compelling as the physical connection, and Allied Hearts is that kind of book.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write in bursts—long, focused stretches where I’m completely immersed, followed by breaks where I just think about the characters for days. I also talk to myself a lot while writing, especially when working through dialogue or tension-heavy scenes. If someone overheard me, they’d probably think I was rehearsing for a play. I’ve also been known to write pivotal emotional scenes out of order, especially when I already know the impact I want—it helps me stay connected to the heart of the story. Oh, and snacks. Always snacks nearby.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been deeply influenced by authors like Judith McNaught and Jude Deveraux. McNaught’s sweeping emotional arcs and deeply flawed, unforgettable characters showed me how powerful romance can be when it explores vulnerability and forgiveness. Deveraux’s blend of strong heroines, rich historical settings, and heartfelt storytelling made a lasting impact on me. Both authors created stories that stayed with me long after the last page—full of passion, heartache, and ultimately, hope. That’s the kind of emotional depth I strive for in my own writing.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on a historical romance titled The Tides Between Us, set in the late 1600s. It follows a Scottish privateer and a young island healer’s daughter whose worlds couldn’t be more different—but who are forced into each other’s orbit after a shipwreck. It’s a slow-burn, emotionally layered story about identity, trust, and unexpected connection in a time of deep cultural division. I’m also outlining a companion novel to Allied Hearts, exploring another couple whose journey deserves the same depth, passion, and healing. Each project I take on is rooted in emotional truth, with characters who carry their pasts but still dare to hope for something more.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still growing in this area, but I’ve found that combining a few different approaches works best. Book promotion sites like Awesome Gang, Freebooksy, and Ereader News Today have been helpful in reaching new readers, especially during launch periods or special promos. I’m also building my email list through my website to stay connected with readers more personally. Social media—particularly TikTok and Instagram—has been a great creative outlet for sharing book quotes, behind-the-scenes insights, and connecting with fellow romance lovers. I believe a strong mix of visibility, authenticity, and reader engagement goes a long way.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the story that won’t leave you alone—the one you keep thinking about when everything else goes quiet. Don’t chase trends or try to fit into a mold; write what feels honest to you. Protect your writing time, even if it’s just a few minutes a day, and give yourself permission to write imperfectly. The first draft doesn’t need to be polished—it just needs to exist. Most importantly, don’t let fear of judgment or failure keep you from finishing. Your voice matters, and there’s someone out there who needs your story.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’ve heard a few that really struck accord, but for this instance I will say this. “Write the book you want to read.” It sounds simple, but it changed everything for me. When I stopped worrying about what was marketable or trendy and focused instead on telling a story that stirred something in me, the writing became more honest—and more powerful. That advice reminded me that the heart of storytelling is connection, and the best way to reach readers is by writing from a place of truth.
What are you reading now?
The Help.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish my next book.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I’m stranded, I’m thinking long-term survival and escape. So first, I’d bring a solid, practical choice—a detailed survival guide or a book on building rafts and navigating by the stars (because one of us has to be the sensible one). Then for heart and hope, I’d pack A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux, because if I’m stuck on an island, I at least want one swoony, time-traveling hero to keep me company. I’d also bring Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught—because even in the wild, I need my emotional rollercoasters. And maybe a blank journal, so I can write my own castaway romance while waiting for rescue.
