Interview With Author Daisy St. James
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, I’m Daisy and I write deliciously red hot romance! When I first began writing, I wrote in paranormal romance and Urban fantasy (which I still love to do, see The Phoenyx Series, available in KU). In 2022, I dove into contemporary romance and haven’t looked back.
The Phoenyx Series is 4 books (so far!) and my contemporary series is a duet. I have many works in progress though, so keep your eyes peeled for something new!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Filthy Mechanic is my latest book and I was actually inspired by a friend of mine who dealt with substance abuse in the past. My FMC is Zoey, a princess with some fairly serious issues. She’s a wild child with no inhibitions at all. My MMC is Chris and he’s twenty years her senior. He’s had it rough in life and wants to live a nice quiet life… until Zoey comes along!
Zoey is actually a character from my first book in the series, Dirty Professor. She is Caroline’s bestie and Manuel’s step daughter.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Some writers have unusual quirks, but they seem normal to them. I couldn’t tell you what is unusual or not. I just go with the flow and do what works best for me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Well, for my PNR/UF series, Kim Harrison all the way! Her books are LEGEND. As for my contemporary works I would have to say Pam Godwin is a huge inspiration. I never read or wrote in first person, present tense POV before reading her books because it always felt like I was reading a laundry list instead of a story. Pam does it so well though, you hardly notice what tense you’re reading in, so she really inspired me to take the leap in my contemporary books.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I have about five unique works in progress. The most recent is titled Criminally Yours and it’s a remastering of some short stories I wrote when I first began my writing journey, under a different pen name. I’m very excited about that! I also have something else I am working on that I began writing, if you can believe it, when I was about eighteen years old. It has some dark themes so I’m looking forward to getting that out there as well. The cover is STUNNING!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve recently started playing with Facebook ads, but I’m still working through some kinks. I’ve used BookBub before, but most of my promoting has been through Amazon.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be scared. Take the leap! It might seem like every story that could have been written already has been, but those books were never told by YOU. You have a fresh perspective that someone will want to read. It’s a dog eat dog industry and you have to have a tough skin, especially when the reviews roll in, but you can do it!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently ready Net Worth by Amelia Wilde. SO GOOD!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’d like to finish my PNR/UF series because I’m the most sentimental when it comes to those books. They mean so much to me and to not finish telling those characters’ stories would be a travesty.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This is a tough one. If I really HAD to choose, I’d bring empty journals lmao. I love my peers and I adore reading their words, but if I couldn’t write at all, I think I’d die!
