Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Dakota Willink. I am a contemporary romance writer and editor, and the author of The Stone Series. I am an associate member of Romance Writers of America and a Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards winner. At this time, I have two books in my series published, with the third coming later this year.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Stepping Stone. It is a continuation from Heart of Stone, the first book in The Stone Series. I began writing the series because I always wanted to write, but I made excuses about not having enough time. Then one day, I met someone locally that had written and published. She was a wife and mother of three, and just as busy as I was. So, to make a long story short, I just sat down at the computer one day and started typing. I didn’t have a plan or an outline, I just wrote the first things that came to mind. It was that simple.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
The littlest noise is often a distraction (which makes my family crazy sometimes). We have a lot of “silent time” at home when I’m working. However, when I’m struggling with writers block, I put the computer to bed and scroll through my iPod to find music for inspiration.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest inspiration is J.K. Rowling because she never gave up. Her strength and perseverance to tell her story is awe-inspiring. For those that don’t know how she came to be where she is today, I urge you to look into her background.
What are you working on now?
Set in Stone (the 3rd book in The Stone Series).
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The best results I’ve seen are from Facebook ads and through the work that my P.A. does in various Facebook Groups. I’ve experienced mixed results from other websites.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up. It’s hard work, but determination is key. I once read somewhere that 97% of writers don’t finish their book. I don’t know how true that is, but if that number is accurate, it makes me sad to think about all the great unfinished stories out there. Strive to be among the 3% of writers. Become an author.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s not advice per say, but a quote that I like to live by:
“Do one thing every day that scares you.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
What are you reading now?
I just bought a paperback copy of The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas. I’m really looking forward to reading it!
What’s next for you as a writer?
After I finish Set In Stone, I’m not sure if I’ll start a new series or a standalone. I have ideas for both, so time will tell.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Without a doubt, it would be the last 4 books in the Harry Potter Series.
