Interview With Author Dan Whelan
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written just the one, ‘Jupiter’s Gate’. However the next one is almost ready and it’s called Orion’s Belt
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Jupiter’s Gate, I had a cat called Jupiter and he sat on the gate (really!) then he went walkabout for two weeks. I knew he would come back butevery one thought he’d been runover… I’ve had cats for years I knew he was out having a good time… and he came back. I thought it was a great story for kids.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No not really, although as I read and write in French as well occasionally I’lllook at what I’ve written and two or three random lines will be in French.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
John Steinbeck – simple, you think? Then read it again. Some Stephen King books – they’re almost not what you think they might be (Example – The Stand) For me a great book is one that surprises me.
What are you working on now?
The sequel to JG which is called Orion’s belt
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t promote but I do love IngramSpark
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Totally go for it… yes it’s an investment. Yes there is a good probability it won’t make the money that you want, you’ll probably never be the next JK Rowling or the next Stephen King.
However for the rest of your life you will be a published author, no one can take that away, and who knows maybe it will go ballistic and you’ll be raking in money. Personally I can’t think of any thing more impressive that seeing a book for sale and thinking… I wrote that and hey people bought it, kids loved it, it brought parents and kids together.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Share what you know, learn what you don’t.
What are you reading now?
I’ve just finished Alex Howards the Ghost cat… very good and I’m thinking of re reading Captain Tom’s book again as I enjoyed it so much first time around.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Orion’s belt is next, then Around Ganymede ( Ganymede is one of Jupiter’s moons )
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Stand -Stephen King, Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck, Lord of the Flies – William Golding
