Interview With Author Daniel Bautz
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Creatively, I’ve done it all. Graphic designer, podcast host, writer and director of film, and radio show host. Those accomplishments pale compared to my true calling – the written word. My debut novel, Life is in the Blood, has been called “an astounding achievement in storytelling” (Anatolian Press).
‘Life Is In The Blood’ is my debut novel from Anatolian Press. It is a horror action adventure. Also, my short story, ‘Made of Clay’ was published in the Autumn Tales Anthology. I have two self published books, an action comedy novella ‘War On Christmas: Down The Chimney’, a sketchbook anthology, ‘Von Otto’s Child and Other Forsaken Offspring.’
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is ‘Life Is In The Blood.’
I was inspired by a weird piece of history. A blood cult in the Midwest in the 1800s used a scripture from Leviticus to justify drinking animal blood. This made me ask what if a vampire used his blood to create a throng of followers through the power in their blood.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure. I have to have music on. Preferably vinyl.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Edgar Allan Poe. His writing showed me the beauty of words. The Masters-Dickens, Steinbeck, Hawthorne, Robert E. Howard, Agatha Christie. Modern writers, Barker, King, Warren Murphy, Richard Sapir, Bernard Cornwell, Brad Meltzer. This list could be so long. I will stop here, this could be longer than Moby Dick.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a Modern Thriller with Paranormal elements. About halfway through the first draft.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social is important. I enjoy Instagram because engagement is genuine and not bogged down with all the other stuff going on outside the writing community. I find being available for interviews and not just shows about writing very helpful.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write. That’s it. If you want to be a writer, write. Keep going, don’t stop, never give in. Hone the craft and write always.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From Ray Bradbury, “Write a short story every week. You can’t write 52 bad stories.”
What are you reading now?
I am reading right now, “Rise of the Moon,” by JB Caine.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My next book should be out in the fall. Details comings soon, I will share that information on my social platforms, newsletter and website.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Hobbit, The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, The Thief of Always.
