Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Kiwi/American novelist, poet and short story author of four books. I’m based usually in beautiful New Zealand, but spend a fair bit of time each year in Southern California, and other places I enjoy and that inspire me to write, such as the pacific northwest and Baja, Mexico.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I’ve just released a book of poems called Emotional Paleontology, which deals with what remains of the powerful experiences we have in live, how they shape us one way or another.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I have a nice study with a a view of the horse ranch I have in NZ, and a very supportive partner and grown up children, who give me a lot of space to travel and scribble.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love great sweeping stories, so the South African Wilbur Smith and his fabulous Egyptian stories are a favorite. I enjoy all the good crime writers, such as Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, etc. I was a huge fan of the late Robert B. Parker (Spenser) and am pleased his legacy is being carried on by his trust.
What are you working on now?
A follow-up to Redemption Cove – Ben my hero has a few more adventures to com. Also a prequel to Children of the Nakba also set in Israel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love to reach out to other readers and writers through my website. The Awesome group do terrific promotions.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing is the art, re-writing is the craft. Get it write and listen to your beta readers.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never attribute to malice what can be explained by simple foolishness.
What are you reading now?
Michael Crichton’s posthumously published Dragon’s Teeth. Also a number of books to do reviews in support of some terrific young writers.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Get the two manuscripts i’m working on now completed, then another collection of poems. Poetry can do things a longer piece can’t, and I like to keep a balance in my art.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Wilbur Smith’s River God & Seventh Scroll, a book or two from Bernard Cornwell’s Uhtred series, and Shelby Foote’s Civil War series.
