Interview With Author David Devine
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have one published title, HIBERNIA.
David Devine is a second-generation Irish-American. Today, the lilt of an Irish brogue touches his heart. A native of San Francisco he was raised across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree for Industrial Engineering & Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley.
He worked in Ocean Transportation holding roles in Engineering, Marine Terminal Management, and Sales. He also provided Management Consulting services in Silicon Valley. Having not suffered enough anguish from the corporate world he owned and operated a bicycle store.
A prolific technical writer, David began creative writing on a whim with short stories. Having anthology success with Murray, The Disgruntled Reindeer, he would go on to write a novella and a radio play script. Hibernia is his debut novel.
He has two daughters. David currently resides near the mist of Niagara Falls with his Grenadian (he swears she sounds Irish) wife.
He takes inspiration from Julia Child, Lee Trevino, and W.C. Fields. He is an avid chef. Do not ask for his guacamole recipe. There is none; it’s guacamole.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
HIBERNIA. It is the Latin name for the isle just west of Great Britain. Today, it is used to refer to all things Irish.
My father worked for the Hibernia Bank when I was a child.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am a caretaker for a disabled adult daughter and an elderly mother. Between caretaking and housekeeping, I find myself writing in waiting rooms, sidelines, and anytime I can keep my eyes open. Often, though, I will have much time to ponder the next sentence, paragraph, plot twist as I mow, clean, chauffeur, cook, shop, etc.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I try to write with wit and self-deprecating humor. It is more a 1960’s Ocean’s 11 style.
What are you working on now?
UnCOMMONWEALTH. A modern day Casablanca set in Grenada. My wife is a Canadian Grenadian. Although it is one of the smallest countries in the world, The Spice Isle is a fascinating combination of culture and international intrigue.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Trying to figure that out.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Being a new author I had to write to become comfortable writing. I started with short stories. I moved on to a novella and a radio script. Now, I am not intimidated at the thought of writing novels.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You can’t score if you don’t shoot. …Join a writing group.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Balance promotion of my first novel with writing my second novel.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Two dictionaries and a Thesaurus. They contain all the other books.
