Interview With Author David Nash
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a writer of novels, short stories, and songs. My first novel, The Man in the Pines (Ten16 Press), a reimagining of the tale of Paul Bunyan, was released in 2020 with wonderful reviews. I am a winner of the Iron Pen short fiction contest and has a large collection of recorded albums which he performs regularly around the Driftless Region of the United States. My short story, Catatonic Survival, was included in the 2023 release of “What’s in the Body Bag” (Dead Bird Publishing).
My second novel, In Wells’ Time is set to be released by Unsolicited Press this February.
I live in a wonderfully cold and beautiful part of the country with my wife and kids where I spend my days practicing as a pediatric ophthalmologist.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel, In Wells’ Time (Out February 2024 from Unsolicited Press), was inspired by a late night panic attack fed by the fear of how fast time was slipping by. The story contemplates how we use our time on this Earth as a family struggles to come to terms with the life story of their recently deceased brother and son. Through Wells’ narrative journal, his family works to understand the choices he made and what the magical curse he carried means for them.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to write with coffee and music. If I can write standing, I really enjoy it and will often subtly act out motions the characters are making. On bad days, when I’m stressed and editing, I’ve got a naughty habit of picking my eyebrows. If they aren’t looking too bushy, I’m probably editing 🙂
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Benjamin Percy who is a more contemporary author. He drives story forward so well. So graphically. I was never a huge reader growing up, but I definitely enjoyed Tolkien, Stephen King, and the Harry Potter series.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished a collection of dark short fiction that has been accepted for publication in 2026 by Unsolicited Press. I’m very thankful for that. I’m also currently working on a co-write with a friend for another short story anthology. What I really want to do is find my next novel. I feel like I’m close to that idea.
With songwriting, I’m always doing something. Two of my songwriter friends and I created a band called Bowling League and just released a snarky, sad and silly holiday album called “Humbug.” It’s very lo-fi, but spectacular. We are really happy with how it turned out.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use instagram primarily. It fits with my personality than facebook or the other socials. I have a website as a landing page, but I really love just getting out and talking with folks at book shops and other events when I can read or play music for good company.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing and don’t be afraid to hop genres or ideas. When you hit a wall in the story, have the courage to just close your eyes and see where the next step falls. Inch by inch, the story will unfold even when you can’t see the path to the close.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t overthink it.
Overthinking leads to hesitancy. This leads to inaction. Then you can spiral into a place where you feel bad because you never reached your goal. I’m all for careful planning, but sometimes there is a point where you just need to jump into the cold water.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Suicide Woods by Benjamin Percy. I’m also listening to Last Action Heroes which is phenomenal.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Ugh, I just want to keep writing. I’m fighting with the desire to write something literary or this big project that is more sci-fi.
More presently, I’m getting ready for the release of my new novel, In Wells’ Time. It’s a story that I’m really happy with. I had so many images in my head as I was writing this book. There were so many scenes I knew had to be there. To see it all come together has been really special. I’m just really excited for people to read it.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Stand (I’ll have the time to get through it), My Side of the Mountain (childhood favorite and I might pick up some tips), The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (I’m really enjoy that book right now).
