Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is David Seller, I’m 28 and I live in Manchester with my wife and two kids. I have been reading and writing all my life but I only sat down to serious writing two years ago. I always wanted to write a book but somehow I never found myself following through.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest (my debut) book is called Hank Buttefield and the idea came to me while I was watching some live tennis on TV. I needed an idea for my first ever novel and I thopught if it would be about soemthing I was nuts about, namely sports, it would help me find the push. I was right. It is the lifestory of a boy who grows up in really adverse conditions and despite teh odds fights to become a professional tennis player. The book has the comic touch to it, but essentially it’s a book about someone discovering the values of life, how to keep his feet grounded despite everything going on around him.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I can think of offhand.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My main influences would be Stephen King and Ken follett. In Stepehn King I discovered the gamut of possibilities with the written word. His ability to make a scene come alive, make you tremble or laugh as you read is peerless. King is my role model as how I want to write. Ken Follett is my role model for plotting. His stories are sublime, the rollercoaster of emotions they drag you on is exceptional.
What are you working on now?
I am writing a new novel, completely different genre. It’s about a fictitious country in the Balkans in the 15th century. About a rebel faction usurping the king and the crown prince saddled with the responsibility of leading a fightback.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am using social networking, twitter and stuff. I have been using Goodreads a lot as well.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My one piece of advice I would impart to new authors is that they should really push on with their first novel. Talking from experience, the first novel is so hard to crack. The plot, the pacing, the diction, it’s all a learning curve. The moment I completed my first novel I suddenly found that the new novel was flowing so much better. So basically once you get the first one out the wya the floodgates open.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I think the best advice was not to let yourself get bogged down while writing. If a word or detail is holding you up skip it out and get back to it later.
What are you reading now?
Jeffery Deaver The Kill Room
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a job and a family, so writing is always an extracurricular activity for me. However I do want to keep writing stuff and hopefully sharing it with people.
What is your favorite book of all time?
It would have to be a Ken Follett – I have a couple of candidates..a dangerous fortune, pillars of the earth.
