Interview With Author David Walters
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve only written one book. My lifelong focus as an artist has been primarily on visual creativity. I’ve worked professionally as a fine artist and illustrator.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Malama Island” came about from a friend and I playing around with ideas about escaping to a magical hidden island.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write for enjoyment. It helps me organize and give meaning to thoughts and memories. I’m not driven or have any particular kind of routine.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve always liked listening to stories whether they are expressed through film or books. Being able to understand an author is critical. Simplicity and clarity impresses me. I’ve read many books, mostly in the classic science fiction category. Michael Crichton comes to mind as an enjoyable author to read. Rarely did I focus on storytelling methods. Writing a book was a huge learning experience and now I pay more attention.
What are you working on now?
Currently I have no plans for another book although an idea for a sequel has crossed my mind.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As I am new to this and just learning about how best to promote “Malama Island”, I have not yet had much success. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
As I am a new author and it took me years to create this book, I’m just glad I continued and didn’t give up. It has been very rewarding to read the finished piece.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write who you are and what you know through experience. Try to be as true to yourself as you possibly can. I don’t feel it’s spiritually beneficial to imitate the popular or try to predict what others will like.
What are you reading now?
Currently I’m not reading any particular book. I do watch a lot of films with close attention to scripting.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I would like to write at more length about what inspired the book “Malama Island” I wrote. I know people often read for superficial enjoyment but sometimes more is hidden between the lines that they may not have noticed.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I can’t think of a worse fate than being stranded alone. Stories in their purest form emerge and are shared with others directly. The books I feel are most important to me and worth a reread are ones by Daniel Quinn; “Ishmael”, “Story of B” and “My Ishmael”. These novels are about story and how they shape our view of the world.
