Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a retired federal agent having worked for several law enforcement and investigative agencies in the U.S. government. I spend my leisure time writing, traveling and, most importantly, spending lots of time with our grandson. I have few hobbies and don’t play golf – just couldn’t get the hang of it. I had my first book published in October 2016.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Probable Cause for Vengeance”. It’s a crime fiction novel centering around a Deputy U.S. Marshal hunting down a fugitive terrorist who is trying to escape back to his homeland of Pakistan. The idea for the book came from my experiences while serving with the U.S. Marshals Service. The USMS is the federal government’s primary agency for fugitive investigations as well as being responsible for tracking and extraditing fugitives who are apprehended in foreign countries and wanted for persecution in the U.S.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I’m opposite of what most authors are encouraged to do, e.g., write everyday! I only write when I feel like writing. Maybe that’s why it took me almost eight years to finish my novel. I’m not saying that’s a good thing though.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I enjoy an assortment of books; history, biographies, military, crime fiction, suspense, and mystery. Some of my favorite authors are Scott Turow (“Presumed Innocent”), James Patterson (“14th Deadly Sin”) and Jim Webb (“Fields of Fire”). Their books inspired what I write about.
What are you working on now?
I have a sequel to my first novel in my head. Now, I just need to get it down on paper.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Being a debut author, promoting and marketing my book is all very new to me, and exasperating. I am a Goodreads author, which has helped some. I’ve also used OnlineBookClub, BookLife by Publishers Weekly and recently, Awesomegang. I believe you have to take advantage of whatever is out there, because no one is going to come knocking on your door, especially if you’re an unknown author. But please do your research. A lot of the websites, and there are a ton of them, just want your money.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Far from me to give anyone advice since I am a rookie at this. But, if you have a story to tell and you feel it’s worthwhile, then put it down on paper. It’s your story and nobody can change that, no matter how good or bad it is. Trust in your self.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From my platoon sergeant in Vietnam: “If you want to get out of here alive, stay alert and keep your damn head down!” And here I am, alive and well.
What are you reading now?
“Killing the Rising Sun” by Bill O’Reilly.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Attempt to write my next novel and hopefully more after that.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Old Man and the Sea, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, The Day of the Jackal and The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.
