I am Maria Clarke, a 49-year-old professor of psychology and psychiatry, who has struggled with her
own mental health for many years before deciding to write my first book. People often say
those who choose to become psychologists do so to determine what went “wrong” in their
lives. In my case, I would say that it is partially true.
I started attending DBT skills training groups and working with a therapist who
specialized in DBT. And it changed my life. DBT helped me to understand my emotions,
how to cope with them healthily, and how to set boundaries in my relationships. It was a
slow and difficult process, but I eventually learned how to control my emotions and
reactions, which led to me changing my degree in accounting to psychology.
I was motivated by a desire to help others who suffer as I have. To teach others what I
have learned and help bring our world to a more manageable and understanding state.
What I have learned through my own journey has been invaluable in helping my patients.
So, in a way, my books are also for them.
